UNITAR was created in 1963 to train and equip young diplomats from newly-independent UN Member States with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate through the diplomatic environment.
Over the years, UNITAR has acquired unique expertise and experience in designing and delivering a variety of training activities. We have become a leading institute in the provision of customized and creative learning solutions to institutions and individuals from both public and private sectors.
With a strategy fully focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNITAR supports Governments to implement the 2030 Agenda.

CIFAL GLOBAL NETWORK
The CIFAL Global Network is composed of 31 International Training Centres for Authorities and Leaders, all coordinated by UNITAR’s Social Development Programme. The strategic locations of the 31 centres, which can be found across Asia, Oceania, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean ensure a global outreach. Each CIFAL centre provides innovative training and serves as a hub for the exchange of knowledge amongst government officials, the private sector, and civil society.
The central purpose of the CIFAL training programs is to develop and strengthen human capacities to better respond to development challenges and to facilitate City-to-City (C2C) partnerships. The CIFAL alliance provides a platform for dialogue and knowledge transfer on key development-related issues. Through knowledge management methodologies, CIFALs provide networking opportunities that lead to collaboration, facilitation of peer-to-peer learning, and exchange of best practices.

CIFAL ISTANBUL
CIFAL Istanbul was established in 2019 in collaboration with Bahçeşehir University (BAU). The center’s mission is to advance and enhance capacity on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for public and private sector leaders, nongovernmental organization representatives, academics, local authorities, and students.
Through the transfer of best-knowledge practices, social awareness, and cross-sectional collaboration, CIFAL Istanbul seeks to strengthen sustainable development capacities for individuals and institutions at the national and international level.

CIFAL Flanders
Cifal Flanders is a UNITAR-affiliated center of expertise on the SDGs offering trainings, project development and coaching.
CIFAL Flanders promotes peace, human rights and sustainable development and the declarations, principles and guidelines of the United Nations, with focus on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
CIFAL Flanders is devoted to strengthen a just transition towards a sustainable society and economy through capacity building of all actors in society.

CIFAL Istanbul Youth Center opened at BAU South Campus Seacoast Square with the participation of United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNITAR President Mr. Nikhil Seth.
At the center opened in the direction of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, youth will develop their ideas, build their projects, and will sign joint works with the UN. Students who joined the center will be encouraged to apply to the internships and educations at the institutions of UN and can join the CIFAL Istanbul Certificate programs on the topic of Sustainable Development Goals. All BAU undergraduate and postgraduate students will have the right to join the center.
IYC has five main purposes. These purposes are: Developing awareness and ownership of BAU students about the United Nations’ system, corporate structure, and agenda, developing youth awareness on Sustainable Development Goals, to develop the skills of future mediators and decision-makers who can empathize with other cultures and societies, be reliable, have credibility, build a sense of trust, be fair and understanding, and support them to develop the courage, patience and balanced attitudes necessary for international cooperation among young people who are ambassadors of the future world order. to help develop a sense of time, harmony, persistence, and creativity in designing lasting peace and prosperity for society and the planet.
BAU has the optimum place to embody IYC as being among the leading higher education institution with a diversity of international students. Under the mentorship of CIFAL Istanbul, the IGP located at BAU will lead the expanding network of other Turkish higher education institutions.
