WOMEN SUPPORT in SUBJECTS WHERE THEY ARE UNDERREPRESENTED
Bahçeşehir University provides science scholarships to students who want to continue their doctoral education within the scope of its principle of supporting scientists.
Science scholarships are awarded in accordance with the university's principle of empowering women in education and science. In the relevant academic year, 77 students were awarded doctoral science scholarships, and the number of female doctoral students supported by the scholarship is 40.
The table below contains information about students receiving science scholarships. As can be seen from the table, BAU acts with the philosophy of gender equality and women's empowerment by supporting female students in technology and engineering fields where women are less represented.

A new collaboration process has begun in the Women's Energy-On Campus project implemented by Akenerji and Bahçeşehir University. The launch of the Women's Energy-On Campus project, in partnership with Bahçeşehir University and the International Training Center for Managers and Leaders (CIFAL Istanbul) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), was heldÖzlem Ataünal, Akkök Holding Board Member, Executive Board Member Responsible for Energy and CFO, talked about women's representation in the energy sector in her speech and said: “Women's representation in the energy sector in Turkey is really very low. It's even below 20 percent. This rate is only 10 percent in the blue-collar sector. Another striking example is the rate of female students graduating from electrical and electrical-electronics engineering. This rate was 18 percent in 2020. As Akkök Holding's energy group companies Akenerji, SEDAŞ and Sepaş Enerji, we set out for a new future in the energy sector, beyond the ordinary. It's the project I'm most excited about throughout my career. “I see the same excitement in everyone.”
Akkök Holding and Akenerji Human Resources Director Duygu Erzurumlu Cengiz touched upon the importance of the "Women's Energy on Campus" project for the future of the energy sector and said, "As Akkök Holding's energy group companies, we carry out the Women's Energy Project jointly and simultaneously with the goal of gender equality. We set out from our youth to popularize women's energy in the energy sector. "We will introduce our sector closely to future leader candidates. It is very valuable for us to bring future female leaders into the energy sector and to raise awareness about gender equality while doing this."
Speaking at the opening of the program, CIFAL Istanbul-UNITAR Director Prof. Dr. Ebru Canan Sokullu also said that they started cooperation in order to direct female students to the energy sector. Stating that Women's Energy on Campus brings together the academy and the private sector, Sokullu said, “It is a project that we started full of hope that will create positive results. "We are excited that it also serves sustainable development goals," he said.
Bahçeşehir University Rector Prof. Dr. Şirin Karadeniz stated that Women's Energy on Campus is important because it brings together women's education and the energy sector. Stating that they are happy to support the project as Bahçeşehir University, Karadeniz said, “According to research, 67 percent of women working in the energy sector aim for senior management positions, while the rate of those who have not been promoted in the last five years is 61 percent. Women and Girls in Science 101
It is the responsibility of all individuals and humanity to actively support the empowerment of women in many areas of life. Girls and women equally deserve to be seen, heard and supported to reach their potential as much as men. It is of great importance to eliminate the borders that prevent girls and women from achieving their free will and dreams and freely building their lives under equal rights.
The "Women and Girls in Science" webinar is an event organized by CIFAL Istanbul, UNITAR and CIFAL Istanbul Youth Platform within Bahçeşehir University, aiming to take action by raising awareness about the rights of women and girls to take part in technology and science. The event is a supporting action of Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 10, 'Gender Equality' and 'Reduced Inequalities' respectively, with the theme of sustainability.
FEMALES Legends of Science Project: Dissemination Activities 8.11.2022- 14.11.2022
The project is based on the values of gender equality and nondiscrimination between women and men in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, innovation and innovative entrepreneurship. The project aimed to direct girls to careers and professions related to STEM fields. Although 5 different country partners are involved in the project, the provincial unity of 6 countries take part in the project as well. These countries; Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and Romania.
Objectives of “FEMALES” project: ·
Participants within the duration of the project will be 300 professionals (teachers and others) and 1500 students of the profile described above. Participating organizations are experienced organizations and well suited team of professionals from all aspects of the project from public bodies and educational authorities, University researchers and professors, NGOs and associations with great activity on the STEM field game-based and digital learning tools. BAU University and Sukru Ulgezen vocational high school in Istanbul Turkey, Challedu game-based education NGO from Greece, AIJU digital tools NGO in Spain, Euphoria net srl European values NGO in Italy , CDDT public body for teacher education in Romania for career development are the partners of the project.
