ELT 5003 engages the student-teacher in in-depth discussion of such issues as CLIL, SIOP, English as Lingua Franca, World Englishes, NNEST issues, The Common European Framework, English Language Portfolio and alternative methods of assessment as well as change management. An increased familiarity with these concepts will provide alternative lenses through which the student-teacher may view, analyze, and reconceptualize his/her approach and classroom practice.

In this course, students will develop a comprehensive knowledge base covering a wide array of key sociolinguistic topics such as: social dialects and registers, code-switching, language change, language and culture, ethnography, speech act theory, language and gender, and language planning.

This course will familiarize students with theoretical and practical issues related to the selection of content and the development of corresponding instructional materials for ESL/EFL courses. It will provide students with an opportunity to design an L2 curriculum with corresponding syllabi and materials based on students’ own interests and needs.
ELT5008 Language Awareness and Analysis
The course will focus on various genres and rhetorical styles of written and spoken language. Language will be explored vis-à-vis its role in politics, media, advertising, and cultural contrast. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the specified topics through presentations, papers, and projects.
ELT5009 English Language Testing
This course examines the role of testing; provides an overview of current research and theories of language testing, surveys types of tests; discusses the criteria of a good test including reliability and validity; analyzes tasks that variously require listening, speaking, reading, writing, and communicative competence; and provides practice in evaluating and constructing test items.
ELT5010 Linguistics: The Nature of Language
This course covers sub-fields of linguistics. Main topics include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Course assignments and class discussion focus on their relevance and application to second language acquisition and foreign language teaching, in particular, teaching in Turkey.
ELT5012 Discourse Analysis and Second Language Education
Embedded in an understanding of cultural context and pragmatics, the content of ELT 5012 borrows from the fields of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics to enhance classroom communication. The syllabus draws from general textbooks as well as articles written about specific Turkish contexts; students are encouraged to explore these factors as they relate to other cultures familiar to them. Students also analyze and produce spoken and written language in ways that demonstrate an ability to manipulate these factors.

ELT5015 Bilingual Studies in ELT
ELT 5015 explores the foundations of bilingual studies and education, including the sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic principles upon which the theories are based. The course also engages students in the task of contrasting their native language to English according to phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics.
ELT5016 Literature in English Language Teaching
Students of ELT 5016 actively compare authentic literary texts with non-authentic language materials in the classroom. Through writing and reading assignments, students extend their understanding of the English language and its functions with regard to a number of possible writing styles. Emphasis is also placed on literary analysis skills.
ELT5017 International Practicum
This course focuses on a review of current trends in classroom practice to provide student teachers with practical classroom teaching tools. Course activities include exploring case studies, reviewing and analyzing actual lessons and materials, and analyzing and discussing teaching videos in order to provide the student teachers much time in practice as they reason through classroom matters. To supplement in-class activities, student teachers will engage in field experience.

The seminar course introduces students with various current research ideas widening their perspectives and awareness of topics of interests through invited speakers and their presentations. The course orients students to conduct literature review on a pre-determined subject, to help them gain competence in synthesizing the literature, collect data, analyze, interpret and discuss the findings.

EDT5003 Instructional Design
This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to educational research. An overview of quantitative and qualitative approaches to educational research is offered. Topics in quantitative research include types of quantitative research, research validity, research design, sampling, and measurement. The discussion on qualitative research includes types of qualitative research, data collection and data analysis techniques in qualitative research as well as a comparison of quantitative and qualitative approaches. A brief introduction to mixed method designs that combine the quantitative and the qualitative approaches in the same study will also be made. Steps common to any educational research including literature review, writing a research proposal and a research report, using the desired writing/formatting style such as APA will also be covered. Since this course also aims to familiarize students with the thesis/project process, a research proposal will be prepared by the students as an application of the course content and skills. In addition, where possible, students will be exposed to examples of different sections of articles to discuss proper/improper applications of the research methodology taught in this course.
EDT5004 Multimedia Design and Production in Education
This course introduces students to the design and production process of developing interactive multimedia, a combination of text, sound, animation, graphics, and video. Students will be given an opportunity to work with a variety of software including programs used for sound and video production, multimedia presentations, web and desktop publishing, and photo & image editing. Students are also to develop an understanding of new media related guiding design principles for the design of effective multimedia materials and are to apply them in developing multimedia applications. An overarching theme is appreciation of four dimensions of multimedia: content, aesthetics, functionality, and usability.

This course will cover application of theory, principles, and instructional practice in distance education. It will also provide instruction to learners separated from the instructor by distance and/or time. We will also address characteristics (planning, development, implementation, administration, and evaluation), technologies (telecommunications, course or learning management systems, virtual environments with 3D, wikis, blogs, and Google apps), and current issues that exist in a distance educational environment.

Students will have experiences in developing TBE for both degree seeking and continuing education adult learners.

The primary purpose of this course is to gain familiarity with important theories and research associated with classroom-based second language acquisition.

This course will primarily focus on quantitative data analysis. Topics in this course will include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, sampling distributions, t-test, ANOVA, and regression. In this course you will engage in the entire process of developing instructional video programs, from concept to finished project. Tasks in the process include message definition, treatment development, scriptwriting, storyboarding, production, post-production editing, evaluation, the operation of digital video cameras, production personnel, medium requirements, lighting, and sound.
EDT5018 Adaptive/Assistive Technology
This course is designed to be an overview of the principles, techniques and applications used in assistive and adaptive technology (AT) for people with special needs. The basic concept of the course material is to learn about and use technologies (low to high) to overcome handicaps, improve functionality and identify features to meet the educational needs of this population. Strategies for integrating AT into the classroom in both self-contained and inclusive settings will be discussed. The course will be focusing mostly on integrating technology/computer based applications and adaptations.

EDT 5019 ICT in Education is a graduate level course that covers the theories, frameworks, and practices of computer- and web-based applications in various instructional settings, paradigms, theories and research regarding the use of technologies in teaching. Throughout the course, we will explore miscellaneous technology options and their implementation in teaching and learning. The first weeks of the course will prepare you with the foundational information in the area of Computer assisted instruction, while the rest of the course will combine research and practical information in teaching different areas and skills with CAI technologies. In this course, students will also gain practical experience in pedagogical applications of computers, including using and evaluating various software, websites, and Web 2.0 tools.
