Gendering EU Politics Seminers: Heather MacRae, “Gender, Crisis and EU Integration”, 20 October 2023, Bahçeşehir University (hyrid)
At the Fourth Gendering EU Politics Seminar, we were delighted to host Professor Heather MacRae, a distinguished scholar known for her tailored research in gendering EU studies. Professor MacRae, affiliated with York University in Canada, has gained international recognition for her significant contributions to the field.
Prof. MacRae held a Jean Monnet Chair from 2014 to 2016 as part of the Erasmus Plus program and secured an SSHRC Insight grant for her project titled "The (In)Visibility of Gender in the European Union," examining the marginalization of gender initiatives during perceived crises. Her research places her at the forefront of the field, establishing her as a pioneering figure in gendering EU politics. Two of Professor MacRae's groundbreaking works that resonate with me are "Rescaling Gender Relations: The Influence of European Directives on the German Gender Regime," published in 2006 in Social Studies, and "The EU as a Gender-Equal Polity: Myths and Realities," published in 2010 by the Journal of Common Market Studies.
One particularly inspiring collaborative effort is the study titled "Does European Union Studies Have a Gender Problem? Experiences from Researching Brexit," co-authored with Roberta Guerrina, Toni Haastrup, Katharine A.M. Wright, Annick Masselot, and Rosalind Cavaghan. This work sheds light on the male-dominated landscape of European studies in Europe, in stark contrast to the female-dominated field observed in Turkey. It is challenging to adequately convey the depth of Professor MacRae's contributions and their impact.
