17.4.1 - Commitment to Meaningful Education Around the SDGs
17.4.1. Bahcesehir University Institutional Commitment to Meaningful Education on the Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals
1. Institutional Commitment
Bahçeşehir University (BAU) is firmly committed to integrating sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its educational philosophy, academic programmes, institutional policies, and university culture. Guided by its mission and vision, BAU regards Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an essential dimension of higher education and a fundamental responsibility in preparing individuals for an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world.
The University's commitment is grounded in its educational philosophy and its graduate profile, which reflects the qualities, knowledge, and competencies that BAU seeks to cultivate in its graduates. This approach brings together academic excellence, interdisciplinary knowledge, critical thinking, ethical awareness, sustainability literacy, and an understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
BAU is dedicated to preparing graduates who are equipped not only with professional expertise but also with the knowledge, perspectives, and competencies necessary to understand sustainability challenges, make informed and responsible decisions, and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
Sustainability is therefore embedded in BAU's understanding of educational quality and institutional responsibility. The University is committed to ensuring that sustainability education remains a continuous and meaningful component of academic learning, connecting global sustainable development priorities with disciplinary knowledge, professional practice, and societal needs.
This commitment is supported by formal institutional policies, university-wide academic requirements, interdisciplinary educational programmes, and long-standing national and international partnerships.
2. Formal Institutional Policy Framework
Bahçeşehir University's commitment to sustainability education is explicitly established within its institutional policy framework, particularly through its Education and Teaching Policy and Social Contribution Policy, which guide the University's academic priorities and educational practices.
2.1. Education and Teaching Policy
BAU's Education and Teaching Policy establishes sustainability and sustainable development as integral considerations in the design and implementation of educational programmes.
Principle 6 explicitly commits the University to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into its educational programmes and supporting sustainable development.
Principle 8 further establishes the University's commitment to designing SDG-oriented and socially beneficial educational programmes that address local needs while reflecting international standards.
Together, these principles provide a formal institutional foundation for incorporating the SDGs into curriculum design, programme development, and educational practice.
The policy reinforces BAU's educational approach by connecting academic learning with interdisciplinary perspectives, practical competencies, and the University's responsibility to contribute to sustainable development.
2.2. Social Contribution Policy
BAU's Social Contribution Policy complements its educational commitments by establishing the connection between academic learning, sustainability, and the University's contribution to society.
Principle 2 specifically addresses the integration of courses related to the Sustainable Development Goals into educational programmes and the development of students' capacities in sustainable development.
This policy commitment strengthens the relationship between sustainability education and the University's wider institutional responsibilities, ensuring that the SDGs are addressed through academic learning as well as engagement with societal challenges.
Together, the Education and Teaching Policy and Social Contribution Policy establish a formal, university-wide commitment to incorporating the SDGs into the educational experience and developing students' sustainability-related knowledge and competencies.
3. Institutionalization of Sustainability Education Through BAU's Graduate Profile Framework
BAU's commitment to meaningful sustainability education is closely connected to the competencies expected of BAU graduates, which inform the University's approach to curriculum design and the development of graduate competencies.
The University seeks to cultivate graduates who possess interdisciplinary perspectives, analytical and critical thinking skills, ethical awareness, and the capacity to understand the implications of their academic and professional decisions within a broader societal and global context.
Within this educational philosophy, sustainability literacy and understanding of the SDGs are essential competencies that complement disciplinary knowledge and professional expertise.
This approach is reflected in BAU's General Education Electives framework, which organizes courses into structured thematic pools aligned with the University's educational priorities and desired graduate competencies.
The framework provides a common educational foundation while allowing students to develop knowledge and perspectives beyond their primary academic disciplines.
By incorporating sustainability into this structure, BAU establishes a direct relationship between its institutional educational philosophy, curriculum requirements, and the competencies expected of its graduates.
4. Mandatory Sustainability Education as a University-Wide Academic Requirement
A central expression of BAU's institutional commitment is the establishment of mandatory sustainability education within graduation requirements.
Under the University's General Education Electives framework, students are required to successfully complete five general elective courses, including at least one course from the designated sustainability-focused course pool.
This requirement applies to students across the University's faculties and academic disciplines, irrespective of their degree programmes.
Successful completion of at least one designated sustainability-focused course is a formal graduation requirement. Students cannot fulfil their degree requirements without completing this component of their education.
The designated sustainability courses include:
GEP0320 – Introduction to the 2030 Agenda: A New Agenda for a Sustainable World
GEP0366 – Practicing Sustainability
GEP0631 – Sustainability and Climate Action
GEP1379 – Sustainability and Ethics
These courses provide a common educational foundation in sustainability, the United Nations 2030 Agenda, and the environmental, social, economic, and ethical dimensions of sustainable development.
Through this institutional requirement, BAU ensures that sustainability education is a formal, compulsory, and measurable element of the undergraduate learning experience.
The requirement also reflects the University's commitment to providing sustainability education that is relevant to students from different academic disciplines and applicable to their future professional and personal lives.
By establishing sustainability education as a university-wide graduation requirement, BAU translates its institutional commitment into a formal academic obligation, ensuring that sustainability-related learning is embedded in the educational pathway of undergraduate students across different disciplines.
5. Integration of the SDGs Across Academic Disciplines
Bahçeşehir University is committed to embedding sustainability-related knowledge and competencies throughout its academic programmes, recognizing that sustainable development requires interdisciplinary understanding and contributions from different fields of expertise.
In addition to the mandatory university-wide sustainability requirement, BAU integrates SDG-related subjects into faculty-based compulsory and elective courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This commitment reflects the University's educational approach of connecting global sustainable development priorities with discipline-specific knowledge, academic inquiry, and professional practice.
Through this integration, students are encouraged to examine sustainability challenges within the contexts of their respective fields, develop an understanding of the broader implications of professional decisions, and acquire competencies relevant to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
