Sustainability Education at Bahçeşehir University
Sustainability Education at Bahçeşehir University
Bahçeşehir University (BAU) strategically manages sustainability and social impact in line with its vision of "contributing to society and achieving excellence," both as an educational institution and as a responsible corporate citizen. BAU implements educational programs that support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.
In alignment with this vision, BAU has adopted a comprehensive education system that integrates the SDGs across the university, including both theoretical and practical courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in accordance with international standards.
To raise awareness of the SDGs among its students, foster a sustainability mindset and encourage sustainable behaviors, BAU incorporates SDG-related courses into its curriculum.
These courses support BAU's sustainable campus and university culture by consistently keeping sustainability at the forefront of students' lives, both on campus and beyond. They also aim to encourage students to act with awareness of the greater good for people and the planet, and to contribute collaboratively to the UN SDGs through group projects and student initiatives.
Sustainability education at BAU is implemented through the following components:
1- Sustainability courses for all BAU students
2- Certificate programs focused on the SDGs within the BAU EDR specialty certificate programs
3- Mandatory and elective courses focused on the SDGs offered within BAU faculties in relation to their academic fields
4- Sustainability-focused certificate programs and training within the university
5- Online sustainability training prepared by BAU faculty members and the distance education unit BAUGO
Sustainability Course ((Mandatory course required for graduation)
Bahçeşehir University offers sustainability courses within its general elective course system to equip students with the principles and practices of sustainability and sustainable development.
In accordance with BAU academic regulations, all students are required to complete five general elective courses. Students may choose four courses freely and must take one of the sustainability courses as their remaining elective.
All students are required to complete one of these sustainability-focused courses in order to graduate.
These courses provide a comprehensive overview of the various aspects of sustainability, focusing on how to build a sustainable future that supports environmental health, social equity and economic development. They examine challenges and examples of integrated, creative strategies at local, national and global levels.
The sustainability courses are designed to enhance students' knowledge of sustainability concepts at both individual and organizational levels under the following main headings:

About EDR Programs
EDR is an education model designed by research and application centers that provides access to a wide range of content. It aims to equip BAU students, regardless of their department, to become well-rounded, innovative and globally preferred individuals who bring diverse perspectives, produce solutions and have acquired the competencies of the future.
Through the EDR model, BAU members closely follow sustainability, global changes and developments; they adapt quickly to the changes of the digital world and gain career opportunities with national and international brands in their chosen sectors while continuing their education. As an interdisciplinary model, EDR supports BAU students in becoming more active, research-oriented, entrepreneurial, responsible and leadership-driven individuals throughout their education. With the EDR model, every BAU member has the chance to develop a global vision!
With the EDR certificate they receive in addition to their diplomas, BAU students stand out both at the university and in the sectors they choose after graduation.
