MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
1. Definition of Internship
An internship is a mandatory training activity carried out to observe the professional applications of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the engineering undergraduate program and to gain professional experience. Internships are carried out at companies approved by the Department of Management Engineering, in accordance with the specified duration and conditions.
To graduate, Management Engineering students are required to complete two mandatory internships: ENM3995 Production Internship (Internship 1) and ENM4995 Management Internship (Internship 2) .
2. Purpose of the Internship
The main purpose of internships is to enable students to observe in practice the theoretical knowledge they have gained during their engineering education, discover their professional interests and prepare for professional life.
Internships offer students the opportunity to:
-
become familiar with different engineering and management practices,
-
gain experience in a real work environment,
-
develop professional communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills,
-
examine production and business processes on site,
-
relate theoretical knowledge to practice.
3. Internship Dates, Durations and Types
3.1. Internship Duration and Timing
To do their mandatory internships, students must have completed their fourth-semester courses. Internships done without meeting this condition are not accepted as mandatory internships.
Students must complete a total of 40 working days of internship, with each internship lasting at least 20 working days .
Internships should primarily be done during academic breaks. Students who will do an internship during the academic semester must be able to work at least three full working days per week.
For internships done during the semester:
-
At least three full working days in the weekly course schedule must be completely free.
-
Online courses are also considered part of the course schedule. Therefore, days with online courses cannot be counted as internship working days.
-
Days with only the Capstone course may be counted as internship working days, provided the student has no other course that day.
-
If the company works on Saturdays and the student actually does the internship on those days, Saturdays may be included in the internship period. For this, an official letter stating that the company works on Saturdays must be submitted to the university.
Important: There is no mandatory order of completion between the ENM3995 Production Internship and the ENM4995 Management Internship. Students may do the Management Internship before the Production Internship if they meet the conditions.
3.2. ENM3995 – Production Internship (Internship 1)
The ENM3995 Production Internship must be carried out at a company with production activities.
During the internship, the student must be able to observe production processes on site and take part in work directly related to production activities.
Departments that may be suitable for the production internship are:
-
Production and Production Planning
-
Research and Development (R&D)
-
Quality Control and Quality Management
-
Purchasing
-
Logistics and Supply Chain Management
-
After-Sales Support
-
Other departments directly related to production processes
Internships in purchasing, logistics, supply chain and similar departments must be directly related to the company's production operations.
The Production Internship must be carried out at the facility where the company actually produces. Work done at the company's headquarters, sales office or administrative units outside the production facility is not accepted as a production internship.
For example, if a company's production facility is in Tuzla and its sales office is in Halkalı, the student must complete the ENM3995 Production Internship at the production facility in Tuzla for 20 working days.
3.3. ENM4995 – Management Internship (Internship 2)
For the ENM4995 Management Internship, the company is not required to have production activities.
Students are expected to do their internship at organizations where they can observe management and business practices related to Management Engineering.
The internship can be done in departments such as management, marketing, finance, human resources, operations management, strategic planning, business development and similar.
For the Management Internship, the student is not required to be at a production facility. The internship can be carried out in the company's approved management or administrative units.
3.4. Doing Both Internships at the Same Company
The ENM3995 Production Internship and the ENM4995 Management Internship may be done at the same company. However, the two internships must be carried out in different departments.
For example, a student may complete the ENM3995 internship in the Production Planning department and the ENM4995 internship in the Marketing department of the same company.
Both internships must comply with their own scope and conditions.
4. Finding an Internship Placement and Internship Application
4.1. Eligible Companies
Students may only do internships at companies approved by the Department of Management Engineering.
The host company must have activities that allow the student to observe engineering and business practices in sufficient scope.
For this reason, very small businesses, public institutions and start-ups are not accepted as internship placements.
Important Note on Family Companies
Internships at companies owned by the student's own family are strictly not accepted.
On the other hand, internships may be done at large-scale family companies with a corporate structure, such as companies in the Koç and Sabancı groups. The fact that such companies are family companies does not in itself prevent an internship.
What matters is that the company does not belong to the student's own family and that the internship meets the conditions set by the Department of Management Engineering.
The final authority on the suitability of the internship placement rests with the Department Internship Committee.
4.2. Internship Application Documents and Digital Procedures
Internship application and document procedures are carried out electronically. Students do not need to come to the office of the department internship coordinator in person or obtain wet signatures to have their documents signed.
The following procedures must be completed before starting the internship:
1. Obtaining the internship documents
The student obtains the Internship Application Form, Internship Requirement Letter and Internship Evaluation Form from the department website.
2. Obtaining acceptance from the host company
The Internship Application Form is completed and approved by the company.
Instead of this form, an internship acceptance letter on the company's letterhead, stamped and signed, stating the company information, internship dates, department and work to be done, may also be used.
The host company and department must meet the department's conditions.
3. Having the Internship Requirement Letter signed
The student completes the Internship Requirement Letter, including the internship dates and required information.
Before the internship starts, the letter is sent to the department internship coordinator by email in PDF format.
The letter signed by the department internship coordinator is sent back to the student electronically. The student forwards this letter to the host company.
The department internship coordinator's signing of the letter does not mean that the student's insurance application has been completed.
4. Completing the SGK internship insurance procedures
Insurance procedures for mandatory internships are carried out by the Internship Procedures Unit of the Bahçeşehir University Human Resources Directorate.
The student is responsible for submitting the required documents to the relevant unit of the university by the announced methods and deadlines.
According to the application window stated on the university's current internship procedures page, documents must be sent to the relevant unit in PDF format no earlier than one month and no later than five days before the internship start date.
After the SGK employment notification is issued, the student must forward it to the host company. If the internship dates change, the Internship Procedures Unit must be notified again with the required documents.
The internship cannot start before the insurance procedures are completed. Internships without completed insurance procedures are not accepted as mandatory internships.
The relevant administrative unit of the university, not the department internship coordinator, is responsible for SGK procedures.

5. Internship Work, Report Preparation and Submission
5.1. Conducting the Internship
Students are required to review the current internship guide published by the department and carry out their work in line with this guide.
The internship report must cover the work the student carried out and observed, and must answer the questions and provide the explanations requested in the relevant internship report template.
When it deems necessary, the department may monitor students' work and attendance at their host companies.
5.2. Internship Evaluation Form
Before the internship starts, the student gives the Internship Evaluation Form to the internship supervisor or authorized person at the company.
When the internship is completed, this form must be filled in, signed and stamped or sealed by the company representative.
The Internship Evaluation Form approved by the company must be attached to the internship report and uploaded to the MS Teams page of the relevant internship course.
There is no need to submit the Internship Evaluation Form separately in a sealed envelope or physically to the department internship coordinator.
5.3. Preparing the Internship Report
Students must use the current report template appropriate to the type of internship they completed.
-
The current ENM3995 Internship Report Template must be used for the ENM3995 Production Internship,
-
and the current ENM4995 Internship Report Template must be used for the ENM4995 Management Internship.
Please note in particular that the ENM3995 Production Internship report format has been updated; old templates from previous semesters must not be used.
Current templates and internship guides must be obtained from the department's internship web page.
5.4. Course Registration and Report Submission
Each internship is evaluated under the relevant course code. After completing their internship, students must register for the relevant ENM3995 or ENM4995 internship course.
The official submission platform for internship reports is MS Teams.
Students are required to upload the requested documents in the announced file format to the report submission area opened on the MS Teams page of the relevant internship course.
Deadlines for internship reports are set by announcements on the MS Teams page of the relevant internship course.
Students must follow MS Teams announcements regularly and upload their documents completely by the announced deadline.
Reports not submitted on time or completely may not be evaluated, and the internship may be considered unsuccessful.
There is no need to submit printed or bound copies of internship reports and the Internship Evaluation Form.
6. Internship Evaluation
Internships are evaluated by the Department Internship Committee in two stages.
6.1. First Stage: Evaluation of the Validity of the Internship
In the first stage, it is examined whether the internship meets the required conditions.
The internship may be considered unsuccessful in any of the following cases:
-
the host company or department is not suitable,
-
the internship duration and working conditions are not met,
-
the average of the scores given to the student in the Internship Evaluation Form is below 3.00/5.00,
-
sufficient professional work is not done during the internship,
-
the work reported is not approved by the company internship supervisor,
-
the required application and insurance procedures are not completed.
Reports of internships considered unsuccessful for these reasons are not evaluated in the second stage.
6.2. Second Stage: Evaluation of the Internship Report
Reports of internships found valid in the first stage are evaluated by the Department Internship Committee in terms of content and format.
The committee may accept the report or request revisions.
If revisions are requested, the student must make the necessary changes and re-upload the revised report to the MS Teams page of the relevant internship course within the announced period.
If the report is accepted, the internship is considered successful. If the requested revisions are not made within the specified period or the revised report is rejected again, the internship is considered unsuccessful.
Internship courses are graded as Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory in accordance with the relevant university regulation.
7. Special Conditions and Other Explanations
7.1. Internship During the Academic Semester
Students awaiting graduation, senior students and students taking summer school courses may do internships during the academic semester, provided they apply with a course schedule approved by student affairs or their academic advisor and can devote at least three full working days per week to the internship.
7.2. Work Done in University Laboratories
If approved by the relevant faculty member and the Department Internship Committee, work carried out in university laboratories or application centers may be accepted as one internship period, provided it meets the required duration and scope conditions.
7.3. Double Major (DMP) Students
Students enrolled in a double major program must fulfill the internship requirements of their second major.
However, if a production internship the student previously completed under the other major program meets the conditions of the Department of Management Engineering's ENM3995 Production Internship, it may be accepted under ENM3995 if approved by the Department Internship Committee.
In this case, the student must register for the ENM3995 course and submit the report, prepared using the current Production Internship Report template on the department website, via MS Teams.
If the internship done in the other major does not meet the production internship conditions, the student must complete the ENM3995 Production Internship separately.
Internship equivalences and other internship requirements under the double major program are evaluated by the Department Internship Committee.
7.4. SGK Insurance Covered by the Company
For mandatory internships, students' internship insurance is covered by the university.
If the student's internship insurance is covered by the company, the company must notify the relevant unit of the university with an official letter.
7.5. Retroactive and Voluntary Internships
Internships that students previously did voluntarily or without completing the required department and insurance procedures are not retroactively accepted as mandatory internships.
Work to be evaluated as a mandatory internship must meet the relevant department conditions and administrative application requirements before the internship starts.
Evaluations regarding the equivalence of internships done under the double major program are made separately from this provision by the Department Internship Committee.
7.6. International Students – Work Permit Exemption
International students who will do a mandatory internship in Türkiye must obtain work permit exemption documents under the university's SGK regulations. Insurance registration as an intern cannot be completed for students without the required exemption document.
In line with the update by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security of the Republic of Türkiye, as of 17 September 2026, work permit exemption applications are made through the following system:
https://calismaizni.csgb.gov.tr/
Applications made before 17 September 2026 can continue to be followed through the previous system:
https://emuafiyet.csgb.gov.tr/
Workplace Profile ID Information
The "Workplace Profile ID" requested in the new work permit exemption application system is the profile number of the workplace where the international student will do the internship.
For workplace-based applications, this profile must be created by the host company. The workplace profile is created by the company's e-Bildirge user registered in the SGK system.
Students must obtain the Workplace Profile ID from their host company and enter it in the relevant field of the work permit exemption application.
It is the student's responsibility to complete work permit exemption applications on time and submit the required documents to the relevant unit of the university.
7.7. Other Cases
The Department of Management Engineering Internship Committee has the authority to decide on the evaluation of internship documents, internship equivalences, exemption requests and special cases not explicitly covered in this text.
