What kind of process awaits me in the mathematics program?
We aim to offer our students innovative and interdisciplinary programs that provide comprehensive knowledge in both theoretical and applied mathematics. The task of any mathematician is to pass the torch of mathematical knowledge to professionals concerned with solving problems in the real world. This task requires mastery of the elements of pure mathematics. Every mathematician should know how to write a definition, how to prove a theorem and how to apply a theorem to solve a problem.
The Bahçeşehir University Department of Mathematics strives to offer in-depth knowledge in the most important areas of theoretical mathematics. Through mathematics education, students can gain knowledge of fundamental subjects such as analysis, abstract algebra, discrete mathematics, general topology, number theory, differential equations, probability theory and mathematical logic. Our courses are designed to encourage critical and creative thinking and offer our students a unique academic experience in an international environment. Our ultimate goal is to enable our students to become successful and effective professionals in their future social and professional lives.
Do I need to know programming when I enter the department?
No, you do not need to know programming. You can build your software knowledge through the elective courses you take.
Can you give an example of a current topic in which mathematics is of great importance?
With the development of technology, artificial intelligence has become a large part of our lives. Machine learning (machine learning)is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that gives systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning is a field at the intersection of statistical, probabilistic, computer science and algorithmic aspects, focusing on the development of computer programs that can access data and learn from it for themselves. A comprehensive mathematical understanding of most of these techniques is necessary to grasp the inner workings of the algorithms well and to obtain good results. In short, we can say that mathematics is the language on which machine learning is built.
What do I need to do to apply to your department?
To be admitted to our department, you need to obtain a sufficient score in the YKS quantitative (Sayısal) score type.
