Research Agenda
The research agenda of our department is defined by the interface between mathematical problems and real-world problems. Natural phenomena such as waves and earthquakes, economic forecasts, robotics, recognition systems, simulations, and even biology, cancer and heart problems are simulated and modeled through mathematical problems. This vision creates a unique academic environment in which theoretical and applied mathematics are pursued in harmony. What is done in theoretical mathematics is to invent new tools and try to solve open problems. Then, when the right conditions arise, these tools are used to solve real-world problems.
From the mathematicians' point of view, theoretical and applied mathematics form a whole. Some topics in mathematics emerged theoretically, were realized and were applied in important fields. Number theory and the theory of finite fields, which are applied extensively in cryptography, are examples of theoretical mathematics topics. Similarly, theoretical mathematics can also emerge for the purpose of application. The ϵ-δ definition of the limit was introduced by Cauchy to verify Newton's work on motion and the effect of infinitesimal changes.
In our department, theoretical mathematics has a highly dynamic structure through collaboration with academics from Europe and the Middle East. Research in this area is mainly concerned with objects equipped with a structure; the natural beauty of mathematical structures, the knowledge they convey to us, the concepts they can define and how they do so are the topics that attract our work. Our contribution to theoretical mathematics is recognized through high-quality articles published in prestigious international journals.
Applied mathematics establishes the connection between science and real-world problems. In establishing this connection, logic requires modeling, modeling requires knowledge, knowledge requires relationships, and relationships require mathematical and logical models. Models are evaluated by their results, and finally all of this is called applied mathematics. Our applied mathematics group has a unique team with many nationally and internationally recognized experts who have contributed to the scientific community through numerous books published by the most prestigious publishers and original articles. In addition, our department stands out with various projects conducted by our faculty members. Our most recent project on a popular topic is "Pruning the Layers of Deep Neural Networks with Sparse Second Order Conic Programming", which was awarded TÜBİTAK funding in August 2019 and is being conducted by our Head of Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süreyya AKYÜZ.
