Advanced Medical Technologies Laboratory
This research laboratory was established in 2014 within the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine. Founded to shed light on the unknowns of medicine with the help of engineering technologies and to put the methods we develop into practice in solving medical problems, the laboratory works within the discipline known as Translational Medicine, which refers to the transformation of basic research into medical applications.
Our laboratory is based on an interdisciplinary structure in which electrical engineers, biomedical engineers, physicians, basic scientists, materials scientists, computer engineers, chemical engineers and academics and industry professionals from many other fields can conduct research and practice. In our laboratory, established with the contribution of world-renowned academics and institutions specialized in their fields, collaborations have been formed under the main headings of basic research,, clinical applicationand product development, and a structure has been designed in which the laboratories of the participating international institutions are open to joint use by researchers. In addition to our laboratory at the BAU Faculty of Medicine, our current network includes contributions from researchers and laboratories in the USA: Boston University and MIT; Italy: the National Research Council of Italy; and Switzerland: EPFL.
Our laboratory focuses on two closely related main areas of study: Molecular Diagnostics and Cell Characterization. Our Molecular Diagnostics work includes the development of diagnostic kits and technologies for viral diseases, food allergies and diseases that can be monitored through biomarkers. In the field of Cell Characterization, regarding cells found in small numbers in body fluids in immune system diseases,
we carry out studies on developing technologies and tests that can be used in the pharmaceutical industry for the detection and characterization of these cells. Our research uses microfabrication techniques and microarray methods, and we also design and produce microfluidic and high-tech optical systems.
