The word toxicology comes from the Greek word for poison (toxicon) and scientific study (logos) and emerged in the 17th century.
Toxicology is a multidisciplinary field of science that helps us understand the harmful effects of chemicals, physical and biological agents, or situations, can have on people, animals, and the environment. Besides, toxicology focuses on protecting organisms and nature from the side effects of xenobiotics and evaluating the safety of chemicals. There are different toxicology areas such as mechanistic toxicology, regulatory toxicology, and descriptive toxicology.
"All things are poison and nothing (is) without poison. Solely the dose determines that a thing is not a poison."
Paracelsus (1493-1541)
