Pharmaceutical chemistry is a science that aims to design, synthesize and elucidate the structure of drug candidates that can reveal the targeted biological effect on living systems. In addition, it examines the candidate molecules’ changes called metabolite in the body. In the early stages of the relevant branch of science, pharmaceutical chemistry, which performed molecular modifications in compounds whose pharmacological activity is known, has gained the ability to examine the interactions of active substances in a molecular dimension with the development of molecular biology and technology and called medicinal chemistry.
A pharmaceutical chemist should be well versed in organic and analytical chemistry for molecule drug design, synthesis, and analysis; to understand the mechanism of action, side effects, and toxic effects of the synthesized compounds and develop molecules to minimize these undesirable effects; have to know biochemistry, pharmacology and molecular biology.
