The increasing urbanization of the world's population, industrial revolutions, advancements in technology, and rise in smart systems and digitalization have led to an ever-increasing demand for energy. However, fossil fuels that we use in the fields of transportation, heating and electricity generation are rapidly depleting and cannot be replaced. In addition, the energy sector is one of the sectors that make the biggest impact on carbon emission, which is one of the biggest reasons that humanity faces disasters such as climate change and global warming. Bahçeşehir University is the first university which opened Energy Systems Engineering undergraduate program in Turkey in 2006 to train new professionals are needed for the energy sector with the influence of increasing energy demand, emerging technologies and environmental factors. Bahçeşehir University still provides education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Energy systems engineering is a multidisciplinary undergraduate program that trains engineers who will carry out all energy systems development and related operations and can manage the process from the production of energy to the end use. In our department, comprehensive training is provided in all issues such as efficient production, storage, transmission, distribution, consumption, economy and planning of energy and energy system design. Students, throughout their education, participate in laboratory studies that combine the work of energy sources such as solar and wind, electrical machinery and power converters used in energy systems with theoretical lessons and practice.
The education plan (curriculum) is updated regularly with the opinions of the department advisory board depending on the developments in the world. In addition, thanks to our CO-OP system, which is an education model based on university-industry collaboration, the courses opened with the participation of leading companies in the energy sector are included in the elective course pool in the department education plan.
Within the frame of Energy Systems Engineering Undergraduate Program, the following minor programs are carried out with the double major program:
• Conventional Energy Minor Program
• Energy Management Minor Program
Depending on the developments in the energy sector, the main fields of study of our graduates are as follows.
• renewable energy resources,
• Development and implementation of energy efficient technologies from primary energy source to end use,
• energy markets where works related to energy trade and energy supply are carried out,
• Use of digital technologies to increase the safety, efficiency, accessibility and sustainability of the currently used energy systems.
