Capstone Project

The purpose of the capstone project is to enable students to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their academic courses to a long-term research project, and to gain experience in scientific research, report writing, and both intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary teamwork.

The Capstone Project consists of two courses that begin in the fall semester and continue into the spring semester. In the BME4991 Capstone Project-I course offered in the fall semester, students are provided with theoretical knowledge on academic project management, project groups are formed, and the groups begin working with their advisors. In principle, topics requiring collaboration between at least two different departments are determined by the advisors, and the groups are composed of students from these departments (Example: Students from the Biomedical Engineering and Software Engineering departments can work together with advisors from both departments on a software development project analyzing physiological signals). By the end of the semester, groups are expected to complete preparatory work for the BME4992 Senior Project-II course, such as understanding research topics, conducting a literature review, and developing a work plan using project management tools.

Only the students who have successfully completed the BME4991 Capstone Project-I course may enroll in the BME4992 Capstone Project-II course during the spring semester. Students taking the BME4992 Capstone Project-II course continue their research through stages such as data collection, model creation, and signal analysis, and complete the course by submitting their final reports to their advisors at the end of the semester.
