Why New Media?
Sıla Ağgül, NM 2nd Year
In today's world, writing news, designing pages and knowing how to take photographs are no longer enough to practice journalism in the true sense. Mastering online journalism has also become essential. In an age when everyone reads the news on the internet first, you need to know exactly how to gather news, write it and present it properly on the platforms made possible by new media. In the New Media Department, we learn online publishing as well as newspaper and television journalism. At a time when journalism is undergoing a transformation, this makes a very important contribution and gives us the opportunity to work in every area of journalism in the future.

When we look at the mass media of earlier periods, we see that in their time they could reach only certain audiences, limited by time and place. New Media removes these limits. We can write our ideas without worrying about borders. More importantly, we can now easily access the ideas not only of our own country but of the whole world. By studying in the New Media Department, we can follow the new media of the new world more closely.
Melisa Damla, NM 4th Year
Although the biggest factor in my choice of New Media was my wish to become an editor, while studying in the department I had the opportunity to understand how important New Media is in this sector and how wide an audience it reaches. It also taught me to look at things more broadly and not to limit myself professionally to a single field. I believe the courses I have taken and the places I have worked have given me a great deal and will continue to do so. New Media was a conscious choice for me, and I believe I made the right one.

We, the so-called "young" generation, are the embodiment of the millennial age. I joined the New Media Department to use new-generation tools more efficiently and to closely follow developments in the media field. I also chose the New Media Department to be at the center of the flow of information in a developing, globalizing world and to use this skill for my career.
Hakan Güngör, NM 4th Year
I saw that in an era when people can create their own channels, where their room to maneuver is much wider than in conventional media, journalists now need to have very different skills. I realized that using blogs and social media well is no longer just something that adds value to journalism for reporters; it has become indispensable. Almost all of the leading journalists in the world press, in addition to writing columns for their newspapers, expand their sphere of influence by using social media effectively and by starting blogs. In the New Media Department, we learn to write news, produce TV news, take photographs, use the internet effectively, create multimedia content and publish online. Most importantly, we know that none of these is less important than the others, that they are the pillars of journalism, and that without even one of them a reporter's output cannot truly stand.
Shaymaa Joha, NM 2nd Year
What encouraged me to choose New Media Department is that I wanted to learn what happens in the media environment and how it works especially the social media, believing that it is the engine of a community. Another reason that I wanted to learn how to be a journalist because there are many communities who are oppressed in different places in this world and we don't know what is happening with them. So, hopefully I will be their voice.
Gökhan Kaya, NM 3rd Year
I chose the New Media Department because it is still a relatively new department. Since it is new and keeps pace with today's technology, job opportunities after graduation are also broad. In journalism, internet news and the media, this is now the age of technology. The New Media Department blends technology and journalism. For these reasons, my choice was "New Media."
Özge Öz, NM Graduate
I chose the New Media Department to practice the profession I wanted more effectively in a world where technology is advancing. I thought I would gain strong academic knowledge about the history of the internet and the rise of social media, in addition to knowledge of both traditional and contemporary journalism. I reached this conclusion by researching the department's academics when I was making my choice, and I have no regrets.
Başak Tatar, NM 2nd Year
I chose the New Media Department both because I have wanted to be a journalist for as long as I can remember and because it brings together many things I love doing. I thought I could develop myself in many areas, from photography to news writing, from computer programs to research. On the other hand, I also had to choose between new media and journalism. Thinking that the internet, having become fast and convenient, would take journalism to its peak, I said, "New media, of course." Also, after reviewing the academic staff before joining the department, I did not feel like choosing anywhere else.
