General Principles of Summer Internship:
The following general principles must be followed in the compulsory summer internship courses of the Mechatronics Engineering Department (MCH3995 Summer Internship-I and MCH4995 Summer Internship-II):
1- It is mandatory for each student enrolled in the Mechatronics Engineering Department to complete two 20-day internships (40 days in total) and to be successful in MCH3995 Summer Internship-I and MCH4995 Summer Internship-II (getting an "S" grade) for graduation.
2- Our students can do their first internship after taking the 2nd year courses at the earliest, and their second internship after taking the 3rd year courses at the earliest.
3- The student should consider the current academic calendar while determining the date duration for internship. It is essential that the internships be done during the academic holiday periods (after the spring semester (if possible based on the academic calendar) or after the fall semester).
4- Students who are in graduation status (with the last two semesters remaining for graduation) can do an internship if there are at least three working days free in their weekly schedule during the courses and exams. For this, the student must not have any classes in the weekly schedule for at least three working days. Online courses are also considered as face-to-face courses. In line with the official statement of the company where the internship will be held, Saturdays may be accepted as working days for the students. Compulsory internship can only be done on the specified free days of student.
5- Official and religious holidays are not considered as internship working days.
6- Students must contact and find the company where (s)he wants to do the summer training. The relevant department of the company in which the internship will be performed must have processes related to mechatronics engineering. For example, departments that include technical and engineering related processes such as production, automation, robotics, various mechanical systems, quality control of hardware, software-electronics (embedded systems) are suitable for internship. However, units such as human resources, purchasing, sales department, accounting, administrative affairs, quality control of processes, management office are not acceptable.
7- The company must employ at least two full-time engineers in the fields of mechatronics, mechanical, electric-electronics or control engineering.
8- Doing both internships in the same company is generally not allowed, but there are exceptions. See FAQ for details.
9- It is a legal obligation to have insurance during the internship, regardless of whether the company is in Turkey or abroad. Internships without insurance will not be considered valid. Students who already have health insurance must also apply to the Directorate of Personnel Department for internship insurance. Internship insurance procedures are carried out by BAU Human Resources Department. Insurance transactions can be made at the earliest one month and at the latest five days before the internship start date. Please visit https://bau.edu.tr/content/10595-internship-directive details.
10- The company where the internship will be held cannot belong to the first degree relative of the student.
Internship Application Process:
1- It is students’ responsibility to find an appropriate company for internship. Students will find and contact the company, then specify the start and end dates of training in accordance with General Rules (items 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). If the company requests, the student can download and print "BAU Mechatronics Engineering Internship Introduction Letter (STF-0)" to submit to the company.
2- Students must inform the internship coordinator of Mechatronics Engineering Department about their preferred place for training for approval. For this, the student must fill out the proper form (STF-1A or STF1B) electronically. After the form is filled, it is printed out then signed and stamped by the company. (Note: If your firm that you are planning to do your internship is in Turkey and you are Turkish citizen, you should fill STF-1A form. If your firm that you are planning to do your internship is in Turkey and you are not Turkish citizen, you should fill STF-1B form. If your firm that you are planning to do your internship is outside Turkey, you should fill STF-1A form.)
3- The Compulsory Internship Form (STF-2) is filled in electronically with any pdf reader program in accordance with the internship dates specified in the Internship Application form (STF-1) (the form is a special form that can be filled in electronically. Only text can be entered in the text sections, only numbers in the number sections, dates can be entered. Select from the pull-down menu to the right of the relevant field).
These two forms STF-1 and STF-2 (not pictures or scanned version, sent filled pdf version) should be sent via e-mail to the MCH department internship coordinator ([email protected]). Documents need to be submitted at least 3 business days before the internship begins. The internship coordinator will give feedback to the student based on the application. If the application is approved, steps provided below should be followed to continue the application process. If the application is not approved, the student should update the application according to the recommendation of the coordinator and should be re-sent to the coordinator.

Steps to be followed during the internship:
1- Student must fill in the Internship Report of the Mechatronics Engineering Department using a computer in accordance with the criteria under the heading "Format Requirements" in the same report. The internship report consists of two major parts: "daily reports" and "general report" (Introduction, About the Company, Practical Training and Conclusion).
2- At the end of the internship, the student should type the internship report based on the template using a computer and should make a printout of the report. The internship supervisor in the company should check the report and should request a correction or should approve the report (signs the parts where the daily and general reports are written and seals with the company stamp)
3- The internship supervisor should evaluate the internship work of the student by filling out the Internship Registry Form (STF-3, with a photo of the student affixed on it). The supervisor should sign and stamp the form with a company stamp. The evaluation report should be returned to the student in a sealed envelope.
Steps to be followed when the internship ends:
1- If you finish your internship during the academic holidays period, the student enrolls in the proper summer training course (MCH3995 Summer Internship I or MCH4995 Summer Internship II) during the course selection week in the first academic term following the completion of the internship.
2- All documents should be submitted as a one pdf file as announced on itslearning by the end of the 4th week of the semester that the students enrolled in the relevant course.
3- The reports are evaluated by the department internship committee. If the students report and other documents are accepted, the students course grade is graded as S at the end of the semester.
4- If the reports are not found sufficient, feedback on the reasons for insufficiency is provided to the student. Students should re-submit their report in two weeks according to given feedback for a re-evaluation via itslearnig. If the student’s internship report is not found appropriate again, there will be no second correction right for the same internship report. The student will receive a U grade at the end of the semester. Students must repeat the internship in a different company.
5- If the prepared report is found proper in terms of content but one or two documents are missing, the student will be unsuccessful from the course. (S/He gets a grade of "U"). However, if a student in this situation completes the missing documents, S/He can choose the relevant internship course again in the following semester and request a re-evaluation of the internship report. This right is granted only once.
6- The deadline for submitting a completed internship report is two academic terms, starting from the day following the end of the internship. Even if the internship report is submitted after this period, it will definitely not be taken into consideration (The internship submitted in the 3rd period following the internship will not be evaluated).
Frequently Asked Questions:
Before starting the internship
- I finished the first year at the end of the spring semester (end of the second semester). Can I do my compulsory internship during the summer break?
No, you cannot. Our students can do their first internship after taking their 2nd year courses at the earliest (4th semester), and their second internship after taking their 3rd year (5th semester) courses at the earliest.
- I'm an Irregular student (students starting 1st year in the Spring semester). I finished my first semester at the end of the spring semester. Can I do my compulsory internship during the summer break?
No, you cannot. Irregular students can start their first internship at the end of the 3rd semester at the earliest, and their second internship at the end of the 5th semester at the earliest.
- Can I do my second internship at the place where I did my first internship before?
We consider compulsory internship as a very important opportunity for our students to experience real life engineering problems and working conditions. Experiences and knowledge gained during the internships make a significant contribution to our students professional development. We would like our students to gain experience in different companies so that this contribution can be greater. For these reasons, in principle, we do not find it appropriate for our students to do two compulsory internships in small and medium-sized companies.
However, since each of the different departments of large-scale companies (for example; Arçelik, Vestel, Beko, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, Renault, THY Teknik, Aselsan, etc.) is equal to an independent company in terms of quality and quantity, students can do two compulsory internships if they wish. They can do this in different departments of large companies, provided that they get approval from the department internship coordinator.
If both internships are to be performed in different companies, the departments may be the same (for example, both production units). However, if both internships are to be held in the same company, the departments must be different (for example, one production department, the other quality control department).
