ELT6020 Advanced Seminar in SLA
Designed for advanced students of second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy, this course focuses on the social and psychological processes of learning a second language in the classroom. The course is divided into four parts. Part one is a brief review of the major themes and ideas in SLA. Part two is a series of lectures from faculty about their research interests for the opportunity to investigate several topics in a more in-depth manner. Part three is a series of student-taught mini lessons about specific SLA topics because it is not only important that you know the content of this course but it is also crucial that you be able to teach the content to your future students. Finally, part four is about conducting an action research about the integration of SLA in language classrooms.

ELT6023 Applied Psycholinguistics and Second Language Research
The goal of this course is to introduce the students to the basic issues in psycholinguistic research, including language production, comprehension, acquisition, and development, decoding and encoding messages or ideas, and brain and language, neural networks and language processing; neural imaging and language processing. Students will gain hands-on experience designing and conducting a variety of experimental methods used in psycholinguistic research on second language acquisition.
ELT6024 Applied Neurolinguistics and Second Language Research
This course focuses on neural mechanisms underlying the acquisition, use, comprehension, and production of language in the brain. It overviews language processing, with a focus on evidence from cognitive neuroscience measures, brain imaging techniques and issues in language and brain research, covering speech perception, word recognition, reading syntax, discourse processing, production, language acquisition, and bilingualism.
ELT6025 Program Design and Evaluation in Language Education
In the course, three essential processes namely, curriculum development, instruction and evaluation will be considered with respect to relevant theory, research, and practice. The course will enable you to develop, evaluate, adapt and extend existing syllabi and curricula to your own contexts and familiarize you with the relationships between curriculum, syllabus and teaching materials.
ELT6026 Sociocultural Theory in SLA
This advanced seminar course will scrutinize how Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory contributes to second language acquisition. Specifically, topics on L2 learning and teaching informed by sociocultural theory (SCT), human development and theorizing in modern cultural historical psychology, and activity theory will be discussed. Some main topics will include history of sociocultural theory; the genetic method; cultural historical activity theory; the zone of proximal development (ZPD); the interface between sociocultural research and language pedagogy; language testing from a sociocultural perspective; dynamic assessment; identity in first and other languages; and collaborative learning; the contribution of SCT to theories of SLA.
ELT6027 Instructional Technology and Applications in FLE
This course covers the theories, frameworks, and practices of computer and web-based applications in foreign/second language teaching, computer-assisted language learning (CALL), paradigms, theories and research regarding the use of technologies in language teaching and online education. Throughout the course, students will explore the knowledge base in the field, compile e-portfolio in the areas of telecommunications, software packages, and interactive computer applications which would facilitate the teaching and research in foreign language education. The students will be involved in analyzing and conducting research in the area of technology and language learning/teaching.
ELT6028 Recent Trends in Foreign Language Education Planning
The course explores the intersection of policy as intended by governmental, political, and/or economic interests; implemented at institutional levels; and experienced by individuals and groups (Davis, 1994, 2009). The course further investigates sociolinguistic experience as a transnational and intercultural phenomena, deriving from global changes in society that impact individual and collective social, cultural, and linguistic identities (Appadurai, 2001). Course participants will draw on their national/transnational interests and concerns to engage in on-the-ground and locally situated language policy research and/or planning intended to foster linguistic, sociocultural, and educational equity.
EDT6101 Quantitative Methods in Educational Research
The overarching objective of this course is to enable the students in a range of techniques of quantitative analysis of data collected in the realm of learning and teaching practices. The major competencies will be geared to introductory concepts of measurement; principles and basic techniques of quantitative assessment and inference in educational research; construction and deconstruction of objective reality; assessment of validity and reliability; exploration of best practices in correlational and comparative analysis; explanatory and confirmatory facts; statistical inference and mathematical modelling; software in quantitative analysis; the quasi-experimental methods to accomplish generalizability; strengths, shortcomings, difficulties, opportunities, and advantages of quantitative approach to data analysis.
EDT6102 Qualitative Methods in Educational Research
The overarching objective of this course is to enable the students in a range of techniques of qualitative analysis of data collected in the realm of learning and teaching practices. The major competencies will be geared to introductory concepts; principles and basic techniques of qualitative analysis in educational research; construction and deconstruction of subjective reality; triangulation to ensure credibility; exploration of best practices in content analysis; coding and decoding in the accumulation of explanatory facts; analytical induction and hypothetical deduction; software in qualitative analysis; the quasi-judicial methods to reach final judgments; strengths, shortcomings, difficulties, opportunities, and advantages of qualitative approach to data analysis.

The main goal of the course is to learn to design and develop effective, efficient, attractive and quality e-learning material for web and gain a deeper understanding of the emerging research literature, experiences, discovery and reflections. The course hepls students to design and develop instructional materials within the framework of instructional design principles and usability guidelines, and guide them through the concepts, research literature and discussions of e-learning design.

ELT 5003 engages the student-teacher in in-depth discussion of such issues as CLIL, SIOP, English as Lingua Franca, World Englishes, NNEST issues, The Common European Framework, English Language Portfolio and alternative methods of assessment as well as change management. An increased familiarity with these concepts will provide alternative lenses through which the student-teacher may view, analyze, and reconceptualize his/her approach and classroom practice.

In this course, students will develop a comprehensive knowledge base covering a wide array of key sociolinguistic topics such as: social dialects and registers, code-switching, language change, language and culture, ethnography, speech act theory, language and gender, and language planning.
ELT5012 Discourse Analysis and Second Language Education
Embedded in an understanding of cultural context and pragmatics, the content of ELT 5012 borrows from the fields of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics to enhance classroom communication. The syllabus draws from general textbooks as well as articles written about specific Turkish contexts; students are encouraged to explore these factors as they relate to other cultures familiar to them. Students also analyze and produce spoken and written language in ways that demonstrate an ability to manipulate these factors.

This course is concerned with primary emphasis on adult learners and the teaching of technology-based education. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through the process of developing four major venues of TBE: CD-based instruction, Web-based instruction, proprietary software-based instruction, and digital video. Students will have experiences in developing TBE for both degree seeking and continuing education adult learners.
EDT5012 Statistical Data Analysis
This course will primarily focus on quantitative data analysis. Topics in this course will include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, sampling distributions, t-test, ANOVA, and regression. A parallel learning activity will be to learn how to use SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to run the above-mentioned statistical procedures.
