Visual Communication Design
The primary aim of university education is to develop universal awareness, problem-solving skills and critical thinking. Guided by the motto of universality and flexibility, our University offers its students a wide range of elective courses, equipping them with the talent and competence to creatively solve design problems across all media in which communication design can take place.
DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN
Students examine visual communication platforms through an interdisciplinary approach and learn to create designs in parallel with developments in information technologies and changing aesthetic values. The department'sprogram enables students to create creative design solutions that open new horizons. The aim is to communicate effectively, visually, aurally and even tactilely, in the intended direction when conveying ideas and information to the audience, in line with the characteristics of media such as television, cinema, newspapers, magazines and the web. In addition to designing themessage aesthetically in theright media, creating new media channels to reach the target audience is also important.
The program applies an educational model that builds the ability to create visual designs in print, motion and interactive media. The curriculum brings together theory, technology and practice in the field of design, emphasizing visual thinking and problem-solving. Giving equal weight to applied design learning for print, motion and interactive media, the department's educational model is based on the process of developing creative ideas for different media, the management of the design process, and the production of creative visual design solutions.
OBJECTIVE
The Department of Communication and Design aims to equip its students with the competence to create an effective visual language and to manage this language.
PROGRAM
To graduate from Bahçeşehir University, students must complete a course load of 130 credits. During the first two years, our students take the fundamental courses required for business (such as economics, accounting, statistics and mathematics). All courses in the first two years are compulsory. Starting from the third year, in addition to the compulsory courses required for this branch, students begin to take elective courses. The electives in the third year are General Elective courses, which aim to broaden students' world view and provide additional skills (such as foreign languages, philosophy, history and music). In the fourth year, after deciding on their area of specialization within business (such as finance, accounting or marketing), students take specialized courses in this area as departmental electives. Students may also choose to take the CO-OP courses described below as electives.
LABORATORIES
3D printing, screen printing and plotter laboratories, as well as computer laboratories that are continuously updated to keep pace with technological developments, help our students get to know the industry and design production methods more closely.
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN
The Department of Communication and Design enables creative individuals who wish to design conceptual and effective visual messages on national and international platforms to create design solutions that open new horizons and set new trends. Print, motion and interactive media are given equal weight in the department. The process of developing creative ideas for these media is transformed into design products through the department's applied structure. The department focuses on managing the design process and finding creative visual design solutions. Its physical facilities make it possible to implement designs for different media, and its industryconnections enable these designs to become reality.
OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION AND DESIGN
1. Graduates bring design-oriented solutions to communication problems based on a solid theoretical foundation.
2. They can develop and implement creative ideas for all media in which communication design can take place.
3. They create value in a global competitive environment by using technology effectively.
4. They gain experience by continuing their education together with the industry and reinforce their learning skills with professional experience.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING A BAU STUDENT
I) Our University is located in a highly advantageous location and has a very strong academic staff of faculty members recognized throughout Türkiye.
II) Among universities in Türkiye, Bahçeşehir University is the only one with universities and campuses abroad that are officially registered in those countries. Currently, our University's sister universities are BAU Germany inBerlin’andBAU USA in Washington. Both universities have campuses and facilities in these cities. There is also an English language school in Washington. A student admitted to Bahçeşehir University may, if they wish, study the Preparatory School in Washington, study the first and second years in Türkiye, then complete the third year at BAU Berlin in the Business Administration department and the fourth year at BAU Washington in the Business Administration department. The programs of Bahçeşehir Istanbul and its sister universities are fully compatible with one another. With this structure, BAU is the only university that offers global students the opportunity to complete their education not only in Türkiye but also in two of the world'smost important centers, the EU and the USA. Bahçeşehir University is working to expand this system to other countries, particularly Hong Kong, in the near future.
In addition, Bahçeşehir University has student exchange agreementswith more than 50 universities around the world, and our students may also benefit from the Erasmus program if they wish. The Universityhas also made special agreements with Syracuse University and the University of San Diego in the USA, and our students can complete part of their education at these universities.
III) Bahçeşehir University is the first university in Türkiye to truly implement university-industry collaboration. This collaboration is carried out within the framework of the CO-OP program.
Within the framework of the CO-OP program, executives or designers of theindustry companies or agencies we partner with come to the University for one semester (14 weeks) to teach students how work is done in their companies, and also provide on-site training by taking students to their companies. Before graduating, Bahçeşehir students gain extensive knowledge of how work is done in theindustry.
IV) Among the most importantneeds of every student studying communication sciences are being able to put what they have learned into practice and to succeed in professional life by receiving feedback on how communication theories work in real life. The Joint Education Model, which we implemented to achieve this goal, gives our students access to Türkiye's leading communication organizations, whose number reached 81 as of 2021. Our students attend real jobinterviews and, for onesemester, devote three days a week to gaining experience within the Joint Education Model. The experience gained during asemester counts as two courses and the compulsory internship. At the end of the semester, students are graded by the partner organization and their academic advisor. Developing their practical skills in all related fields, from advertising, design and gaming to digital media, corporate communication and sound, our students become ready for theindustry while still at university.
V) The BAU Certificate of Expertise program enables students to acquire disciplines and competencies outside their undergraduate field. Students can obtain a certificate by taking the courses of the program they choose. With this new approach to education, students will be able to graduate having acquired an area of expertise parallel to or separate from the discipline they study.
VI) Dual Upis an international education program that enables BAU graduatesto obtain a second undergraduate diploma after one year of study at Berlin International University’. Through Dual Up, BAU’students will learn to approach the same discipline from different perspectives and, in addition to specializing in their field, will have an intercultural learning experience.
Germany, the main driving force of the European Union’, is also a leader with its universities. According to German university law, students who have graduated from universities in other countries are entitled to obtain a German diploma with one year of additional study by applying toprograms at a German university equivalent to their diplomas.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Students approaching graduation are expected to have a visual design portfolio of their own work, at a level that can be presented on national and international design platforms. Our graduates are trained to meet the communication sector's need for qualified experts in the field of design. The department'sprogram aims to bring to the field designers who can offer a holistic perspective through original, design-oriented approaches to the different media that make up visual communication and to the new media where they converge. Graduates work in public and private institutions as designers and practitioners, art directors and consultants.
