Department of Medical Biology
The Department of Medical Biology teaches core courses in the course committees on cells, tissues and organ systems, particularly in the first year of the Faculty of Medicine. In addition, the fundamental principles of medical biology related to different systems are taught in many of the first-year course committees. In the second year of medical education, Medical Genetics courses are taught by the Department of Medical Biology. The aim of this course is to teach medical students the basic topics of genetics and to provide the fundamental knowledge used in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. The mission of the department is to teach medicine at the molecular and cellular level, to teach the molecular and cellular mechanisms that occur in diseases, and to provide guidance on the use of this knowledge in medical practice.
The department has two faculty members, whose research focuses in particular on neuro-oncology, neuroscience and the molecular and cellular mechanisms of infectious diseases. Studies are also carried out on biomarkers that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and on drugs targeting these biomarkers. The educational and research planning of the Neuroscience master's and doctoral program is carried out by the Department of Medical Biology. The department has the equipment and laboratory infrastructure to apply the basic methods covering most cellular and molecular analyses.
Owing to the central role of molecular and cellular studies in scientific research, the Department of Medical Biology carries out joint studies with many researchers from different fields of the basic, clinical and surgical sciences of the Faculty of Medicine. National and international projects are carried out together with many researchers from different universities and departments.
