Department of Political Science and International Relations Webinars During the Pandemic

1) The European Union and the Covid-19 Crisis: Decline or Recovery?

LINK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkE7iDcDYpM

The Department of Political Science and International Relations of the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences discusses the future of the European Union during and after Covid-19 with leading EU experts.

Will the political and economic difficulties faced by the European Union and its members in combating the Covid-19 pandemic lead to tension between the Union and its member states? Thanks to the economic, political and infrastructural support that the Union, with all its institutions, has pledged to member states to combat the pandemic, will it be able to take its place as a stronger supranational actor in the post-pandemic world order? How will the pandemic test affect the populist threat within the European Union? Will Covid-19 bring decline or recovery for the Union?

2) Examining Gender Norms in Diplomacy

LINK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPJKPEIvZ_I

Over the past 20 years, the entry of women into diplomacy has been on the rise. In countries such as Sweden, Norway, Australia and the United States, the proportion of women ambassadors has reached around 25-40%, and after countries such as Sweden and the UK, Saudi Arabia has also sent a woman ambassador to Washington. These changes indicate that the institution of diplomacy, traditionally known for its male-dominated structure, has been opened up for debate and has entered a process of transformation. This webinar examined the historical roles of women in diplomacy, their rise and the strategies they have developed, and discussed the advantages and disadvantages women and men diplomats face in the new international relations system.

3) Migration and Asylum Governance in Times of Crisis

LINK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI2KpocBWQo

Over the last decade, the world has experienced unprecedented levels of migration and asylum movements. At the same time, migration governance processes involving states, regional administrations and international organizations are increasingly being questioned. Leaving aside the conditions that trigger the increase in human mobility, the restrictive border policies pursued by destination countries reveal more clearly every day how important good governance of migration processes is. The aim of this webinar is to discuss, through examples from the European Union and Türkiye, the transformations in the governance of international migration and asylum from the 2015 refugee crisis to the current COVID-19 crisis.

4) Covid-19 and Changes in Voting Behavior in Developed Countries: What Should We Expect?

LINK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfefSHFyZI8

The ways governments have combated the Covid-19 pandemic vary between the functioning of countries' health systems and coping with the socioeconomic costs of the outbreak. Most authoritarian populist governments have tended to ignore, or at least neglect, the scope and significance of the outbreak, which has led to higher death rates. Interestingly, the social divides caused by polarization do not seem to have narrowed. It is still unclear whether populist leaders' popular support has eroded during the Covid-19 period. Therefore, this webinar will address the possible effects of the pandemic on the political landscape of economically developed countries, particularly in countries led by populist leaders, and debates about upcoming general elections.
