As global trends increasingly emphasize human-centered studies, sociology has emerged as a rising discipline, gaining more visibility each day. Acknowledging the interdisciplinary turn in contemporary sociology, the Department of Sociology at Bahçeşehir University accelerates its scientific research, educational activities, and applied projects with a strong academic staff from fields such as History, Anthropology, Political Science, and Literature.
We conduct research in areas such as social media, energy, migration, youth, crime and risk, social movements, gender, and folklore. We invite young individuals who aspire to compete on a global scale to join us in the 2020–2021 academic year. In a world—and a country—undergoing rapid social change, the importance of sociological studies is steadily increasing. In this context, there is a need to educate individuals who, in addition to having a solid foundation in sociological theory, can also absorb methodological, philosophical, political, economic, and humanistic approaches and apply them in practice.
The aim of this program is to produce graduates who possess strong methodological and analytical thinking skills, a high level of awareness regarding global and local dynamics, and the competence to conduct research in various fields—well-equipped for global competition. What sets this program apart is its interdisciplinary framework, which emphasizes the intersections of sociology with education, psychology, anthropology, international relations, philosophy, and history—an approach rarely seen in traditional sociology programs.
The curriculum and research topics include social movements, migration studies, radical political ideologies, social conflict and its resolutions, and social problems stemming from current global conditions. The Sociology Department also offers opportunities for Double Major and Minor programs.
To graduate from Bahçeşehir University, students must complete a total of 240 ECTS credits. During the first two years, students take core sociology courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, Anthropology, Social Psychology, Statistics in Social Sciences, Urban Sociology, Social Stratification, and Theoretical Perspectives. All first-year courses are compulsory. Starting in the second year, students take elective courses alongside the required ones to strengthen their theoretical background and research skills.
In the third year, some elective courses are categorized as general electives, which aim to broaden students’ worldviews and provide additional skills (e.g., foreign languages, philosophy, history, music). In the fourth year, students choose a specialization area (such as Political Sociology, Urban Sociology, Migration Studies, or Gender Studies) and take departmental electives accordingly. They also develop and present a research project in a two-semester seminar course. Students may also choose to take COOP courses, described in detail below, as electives.
