Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences - Sociology
Department of Sociology
As global trends accelerate human-centered studies, sociology is a rising discipline whose visibility is increasing every day. Taking into account that contemporary sociology is oriented toward interdisciplinary studies, the Bahçeşehir University Department of Sociology, with a strong team from the fields of history, anthropology, political science and literature, is accelerating its scientific research, teaching activities and applied projects.
We conduct research on topics such as social media; energy; migration; youth, crime and risks; social movements; gender; and folklore. We welcome young people who wish to prepare for global competition in the 2020-2021 academic year. The importance of sociological studies is steadily increasing in our world and our country, which are experiencing extremely rapid social change. Accordingly, there is a need to educate individuals who have internalized not only solid and reliable theoretical knowledge in the social sciences, and particularly in sociology, but also methodological, philosophical, political, economic and humanistic approaches, and who have gained the ability to apply all of these.
Objective
The objective of this program is to provide our country with graduates who have advanced methodological and intellectual analysis skills, a high awareness of global and local dynamics, readiness for global competition and the competence to conduct research in various fields. The distinctive feature of the program is that, within an interdisciplinary framework rarely found in classical sociology programs, it highlights the points where sociology intersects with education, psychology, anthropology, international relations, philosophy and history.
The research and curriculum topics of the Department of Sociology include social movements, migration studies, radical political movements, social conflict and its resolution, as well as social problems created by current conditions.
The Department of Sociology also offers minor and double major program opportunities.
Program
To graduate from Bahçeşehir University, students must complete a course load of 240 ECTS. In the first two years, our students take the core courses required for sociology (Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, Anthropology, Social Psychology, Statistics in Social Sciences, Urban Sociology, Social Stratification, Theoretical Perspectives). All first-year courses are compulsory. Starting from the second year, in addition to the compulsory courses required for this field, students begin to take elective courses and strengthen their theoretical knowledge and research skills. Some of the third-year electives are General Elective courses, which aim to broaden the student's worldview and provide additional skills (such as foreign languages, philosophy, history and music). In the fourth year, after deciding on their area of specialization in sociology (Political Sociology, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Migration, Gender), students take specialization courses in this area as departmental electives and develop and present a research project in a two-semester seminar course. Students may also take the COOP courses, detailed below, as electives if they wish.
