Declaration of 2020 Policy-Making Goals
As Bahçeşehir University (BAU), a World University in the heart of Istanbul, we are committed to form a productive learning and working environment to all BAU Family members, and thus create a model for the society. In order to achieve and maintain that culture, we prioritize to form a diverse and inclusive environment free from all kinds of discriminatory and violent behaviour. We stand-by the principle of anti-discrimination against race, gender, disability, socio-economic background, sexual orientation, religion, language, and all other kinds; and the principle of anti-harassment against sexual harassment, work-place violence, abuse of authority, and all other kinds.
At the same time, Bahçeşehir University; as an institution of education, research and service to society; relies on academic freedom and academic integrity principles as in the tradition of a University. We believe that it is only possible to innovate and advance, to educate the future generations, and to disseminate knowledge, all aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, if we sustain this tradition.
As our mission statement provides the foundation for further studies; it is our promise to society that it will be our 2020 goal to work on developing our policy papers on these issues in a participatory way; check-up our business processes, starting with the ones that regulate all the steps in students’ and staff’s life-cycle at the university; and make adjustments to prevent and deal with any kind of misconduct.
Bahçeşehir University
Discrimination Policy
Discrimination Policy of Bahçeşehir University: aims to provide a secure and healthy education and work environment for every member of our University’s community without doing any discrimination against race, religion, disability, or gender. Bahçeşehir University has the responsibility to act accordingly to Article 10 of The Consitution of the Republic of Turkey: “Everyone is equal before the law without distinction as to language, race, color, sex, political opinion, philosophical belief, religion, and sector or any such grounds.” Every individual’s rights are recognized without discrimination against race, religion, language, nationality, age, disability state, sexual orientation, and sexual identity.
Gender Equality Policy
Bahçeşehir University devotes itself to encouraging a culture that is inclusive and values diversity. Bahçeşehir University will implement Article 10 of The Constitution of Republic of Turkey under any circumstances, that goes as follows: “Everyone is equal before the law without distinction as to language, race, color, sex, political opinion, philosophical belief, religion, and sector or any such grounds. Men and women have equal rights. The State has the obligation to ensure that this equality exists in practice.”
Harassment Policy
The harassment Policy of Bahçeşehir University promises a life and a studying and learning environment that is free from harassment, where individuals can be healthy and feel safe. Harassment means that an individual is exposed to aggressive and life-threatening behaviors. Harassment and assault are violations of human rights and are criminal offenses.
Employment Equity Policy
Bahçeşehir University condemns any discrimination done at the workplace and also done during the process of hiring. Principals of this policy are as follows: Creating disadvantages during the hiring process and averting any kind of discrimination, listening to feedback and complaints on the matter, equalizing everyone by protecting the rights of every employee. The only important criteria when hiring an individual is qualifications and talent. Bahçeşehir University doesn’t discriminate against any individual for their gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, race, nationality or ethnic origin, religion, age, and disabilities by always following employment equality.
Academic Freedom and Rights Policy
Bahçeşehir University assures academic freedom to everyone in the university with its Academic Freedom and Rights policy prepared according to the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey which protects individuals' fundamental rights and freedoms without discrimination. Academic freedom is: to be able to provide education without any restriction, to choose freely from research and publishing fields to ensure that ideas are expressed as desired and not to be exposed to censorship by the institution it is affiliated with.
Corruption and Bribery Policy
Bahçeşehir University takes the necessary measures with its policy against forced labor, crime, bribery, and corruption that complies with Article 18 of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, which states that “No one shall be forced to work. Forced labor is prohibited.” Bahçeşehir University, in accordance with the anti-bribery and anti-corruption Turkish Constitution; will never allow committing crimes, corruption, and bribery and will not engage in any of these activities.
