The survey results of “Transport and Traffic in Istanbul,” which was prepared with the participation of approximately 10,000Istanbul residents by Bahçeşehir University (BAU) Transportation Engineering, were shared with the public in a meeting held at the university’s Beşiktaş campus. The research, conducted under the leadership of BAU Transport Engineering Department Head, Prof. Dr. Mustafa ILICALI, gives details about traffic and transportations problems in Istanbul as well as proposals for solutions.
THE URBAN TRAVEL AVERAGE FOR AN ISTANBUL CITIZEN IS ABOUT 50 MINUTES
According to the survey only 3 percent of Istanbul citizens are able to use sea transport. The mostpreferred transport mode is buses with 21 percent. Minibuses with 12 percent and Metrobus with 12 percent follow this.While 10 percent of people who travel alone within the city prefer private vehicles; the preference for the rail system in Istanbul represents 9 percent.
The study also gives details on the average travel time of citizens living in Istanbul. Accordingly, 38 percent of Istanbul citizens spend usually 30 to 60 minutes for their one way transportation to work or school. Yet, the percentage of those who reached their work or school in less than 30 minutes one way represents 32 percent. And 9 percent reach their work or school by making longer travel of more than 90 minutes one way. According to the survey, in Istanbul, one-way travel time per person is defined as 50 minutes.
IS MARMARAY BEING PREFERRED?
Thirty-one percent of Istanbul citizens, who prefer sea transportation, during line cancellation due to weather conditions, are using their transportation mode preference in favor of the Metrobus. This preference is followed with 29 percent for Marmaray, 15 percent for standard bus and 11 percent for private vehicles.
To the question “Did the opening of the Marmaray and the Golden Horn Metro Bridge cause changes in your choice of transportation?” 34 percent answered “Yes” and 66 percent answered “No”.
According to the survey, the percentage of people who think that the municipality within the next five years will find permanent solutions for Istanbul’s traffic and transportation problems is 46 percent. The remaining 54 percent think that there will not be a permanent solution.
THE MOST TRAFFIC-PRODUCING CENTER IS KÜÇÜKÇEKMECE, THE BUSIEST ROAD IS ŞİŞLİ
When considering the intensity ratio of travel made in Istanbul, the first place is the European side. Fifty-six percent of travel made in Istanbul is taking place on the European Side.When looking at the starting point, the most traffic generating centers are Küçükçekmece, Üsküdar, Ümraniye and Bahçelievler respectively. The most traffic attracting centers stand out as Şişli, Beşiktaş, Fatih, Kadıköy and Umraniye.
