Egypt and Greece Sign EEZ Agreement - Part 3
- Egypt: We are surprised by Türkiye's claims about an agreement "whose details you do not know". On Thursday evening, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its surprise at statements by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that the "maritime boundary delimitation" agreement signed between Egypt and Greece was invalid.
In a statement on his official Twitter account, the spokesperson of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Regarding what was published by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the agreement signed today to delimit the exclusive economic zone between Egypt and Greece... It is surprising that such statements and claims are issued by a party that has not seen the agreement and its details." On Thursday evening, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Egypt-Greece maritime boundary delimitation agreement was "invalid", adding that "Türkiye considers the agreement null and void, and it also violates Libya's maritime rights."
Egypt and Greece signed an agreement this Thursday evening to delimit the maritime boundaries between the two countries. In light of Türkiye's ongoing gas exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean despite international criticism and condemnation, it is noteworthy that Greece signed an agreement last month to delimit the maritime boundaries between two countries in the Mediterranean.
Türkiye's moves to search for natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean drew strong criticism from Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, especially after it signed an agreement with the Libyan Government of National Accord at the end of last year to delimit maritime boundaries.
On Thursday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias asserted that the agreement signed between the Libyan Government of National Accord headed by Fayez al-Sarraj and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is illegal, violates international law and belongs in the trash.
Last January, the foreign ministers of Egypt, France, Cyprus and Greece met in Cairo, and the four countries issued a joint statement expressing their serious concern over Türkiye's violations in the Eastern Mediterranean region and their hope that Ankara would act responsibly.
