Egypt and Greece Sign EEZ Agreement - Part 2

Egypt and Greece Sign EEZ Agreement - Part 2

1) Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was in Cairo today to meet his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry. The main topic of the talks will be the delimitation of the EEZ between Greece and Egypt.

Moreover, according to reports in the Egyptian press, there is an agreement with the Egyptian authorities on the definition of the continental shelf, to be signed within the next few hours. There was an agenda that lasted all night. It is recalled that the two sides held negotiations when Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias went to Cairo in mid-June to speed up talks on the possible delimitation of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The aim of the Greek side is, in practice, to cancel the Turkish-Libyan Memorandum. This development comes after the agreement signed between Greece and Italy, which resolved a 43-year-old issue, notably with the signing of an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between the two countries. In practice, on 9 June, the extension of the 1977 Continental Shelf Agreement from the seabed to the water column up to the surface of the Ionian Sea was signed.

2) Breaking news: Greek Foreign Minister: The Erdoğan-Sarraj Agreement belongs in the dustbin. Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that the agreement between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the head of the Libyan Government of National Accord, Fayez al-Sarraj, belongs in the trash can.

Following the signing of the agreement delimiting the maritime boundaries between Egypt and Greece with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, the Greek Minister went on to say that today was historic because it came five years after the opening of the new Suez Canal, and stressed that 800 Greek workers continued to work in the Suez Canal after the nationalization decision in 1956.

The Minister described the signing as "historic following the agreement on the delimitation of the maritime boundaries between the two countries, respecting all the laws of the region and contributing to stability in the region."

Shoukry said that the agreement was reached after a series of discussions and in line with the law of the sea and United Nations agreements.

Stressing that there is coordination on various regional positions of mutual interest, Shoukry pointed out that the agreement enables the use of wealth in the exclusive economic zones between the two countries.

Shoukry stated that the two countries are facing behavior that supports terrorism and violates the rules of international law. (Source: Agencies)
