The Turkish Navy issued a navigational notice stating that its vessel "Oruç Reis" would conduct seismic research in the Eastern Mediterranean over the next two weeks.

The move is likely to increase tension in the Eastern Mediterranean between Türkiye on the one hand and a number of countries in the region, led by Greece, on the other.

The countries are in dispute over overlapping claims to the region's oil and gas resources.

A similar notice last month caused friction between the two sides, which was defused following the intervention of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

However, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan said on Friday that Türkiye had resumed energy exploration in the region because Greece had not kept its promises on the matter.

Seismic surveys are usually part of the preliminary work for hydrocarbon exploration and prospecting, and Türkiye and Greece are also at odds over issues such as overflights of the Aegean Sea and the ethnic division of Cyprus.
