Brain and Mind (English) Master's and PhD Module Programs
The Brain & Mind Module programs, to be conducted in collaboration between the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine and the Kadir Has University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences:
"How do the mechanisms behind information processing in the brain work? How does the brain create the mind? What is the informational structure of the mind? How do biological changes affect the structure of the brain and the mind?" Brain and Mind, a new interdisciplinary education program drawing on medicine, natural sciences, and engineering to seek answers to such current questions, is preparing to admit its first students.
The graduate education and research program Brain & Mind, to be conducted in collaboration between the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine and the Kadir Has University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, is preparing to admit its first students in the 2024-25 academic year. The program will approach neuroscience research mainly through three types of data: brain tissue analysis, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The data obtained by medical doctors and molecular biology specialists at the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine will be analyzed by experts in mathematics, physics, and data science working in computational neuroscience at the Kadir Has University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. With this collaboration, the foundations are being laid for a world-class program that aims to integrate experimental research, data modeling, and analysis. The program will offer fully funded education and living support to master's and doctoral students admitted with a limited quota. The living support will be at least equal to TÜBİTAK scholarships, and students will be admitted to the program with a 100% scholarship.
The administration of the program will be carried out by Türker Kılıç (Neurosurgery), Deniz Eroğlu (Complex and Dynamical Systems), Nuray Söğünmez Erdoğan (Bioinformatics), and Timuçin Avşar (Molecular Biology and Genetics). Distinguished researchers from the disciplines of neuroscience, bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, radiology, and mathematics will support our faculty members who contribute to the teaching. In the field of brain and mind, students will also receive training at industry and research centers outside the medical school setting, while at the medical school they will have the opportunity to enhance their qualifications by learning on site with direct access to data, discovering how neuroscience data are obtained and how they are analyzed with machine learning methods. While investigating problems in neuroscience, students will gain experience in the computational and experimental methods needed to solve these problems and, if they wish, will be able to work with expert researchers in their fields on problems they formulate and data they generate themselves.
