Çanakkale Günlüğü: 106th Anniversary of the Victory
The book Çanakkale Günlüğü by İlkin Başar Özal, specialist at Bahçeşehir University Civilization Studies Center, was published on the 106th anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory. Published open to all, the book sheds light on the events of 1914-1916.
Çanakkale Günlüğü is the first book of a series prepared in five volumes. Civilization Studies Center specialist İlkin Başar Özal explains the purpose of writing the book as follows: "It aims to offer a general perspective on the Çanakkale Battles in particular, and at the same time to reveal what happened in different places and how these events interacted with each other over the course of the process."
Although scientific research was drawn on for the book, the author uses everyday language so that an academic style does not tire the reader. As also stated in the book's introductory section, the Çanakkale War is still a part of the age we live in; for this reason, the present tense is used throughout.
Underlining that the Çanakkale War is of great importance not only for Türkiye but also for the world, the book defines its place in history as follows: "No other war in military and political history has stood out as much as this battle, which shaped the future of three empires and led to the founding of five independent states and two revolutions."
In addition to historical information, Çanakkale Günlüğü also examines the war from different dimensions by drawing on diaries, military and political reports, correspondence and letters. In the author's words, the book tells the legendary story of commander Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who ordered his soldiers not to fight but to die. It also covers the day-to-day experiences of those who faced each other at the front.
