An Animated Film from BAU to Help Children with Cancer Overcome Fear of Treatment

Bahçeşehir University's Department of Cartoon and Animation has made an animated film to help children with cancer overcome their fear of treatment.

The animated film, prepared by Prof. Dr. Berrin Pehlivan and her communication team together with BAU Animation's young artists Deniz Koçyiğit and Mustafa Kara, aims to change how young patients perceive the cancer treatment process.

Prof. Dr. Berrin Pehlivan opened a clinic where physicians and specialists from multiple disciplines provide services. Pehlivan, who aims to reach patients, their families and even healthy people through various projects, has made an animated film as her latest project. Consisting of short-film-length two-dimensional animations, the film touches on some aspects of the cancer treatment process that often go unnoticed.

Dr. Berrin Pehlivan noticed that some young patients were afraid of the machines used during treatment. The machines used in radiation therapy can frighten children because of their shape and size. To solve this problem, which causes stress in children, Pehlivan consulted communication professionals and then contacted Dr. Nazlı Eda Noyan, Head of the Department of Animation at Bahçeşehir University.

BAU Animation's young artists Deniz Koçyiğit and Mustafa Kara completed the film by working together with the communication team. Released on digital media, the film attracted great interest. It tells the story of a day of therapy for little Mehmet, who goes to his routine radiology treatment with his grandfather. Through depictions such as "a kind-hearted giant robot" and "unhappy cells that need to be made happy," the animation explains the treatment process in a way suited to children.
