Collaboration Between Bahçeşehir University and the University of Groningen

Prof. Dr. Deniz Balcı, Head of the Department of General Surgery at the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine, together with the organ transplantation team of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, where he is a visiting professor, successfully performed a living donor liver transplant using a surgical technique specially developed by Prof. Balcı for small infants.

A 4-month-old Dutch baby whose bile ducts had not developed due to congenital "Biliary Atresia" had previously undergone two unsuccessful operations, and a transplant decision was made due to progressive liver failure. In this method, which Prof. Dr. Balcı and his team first began applying five years ago and have used successfully in more than 20 cases to date, a 3D reconstruction and surgical simulation of the liver to be transplanted were performed using the Livervision software they developed. During the transplant, the liver was removed from the donor, flipped using a special technique and successfully transplanted into the baby.

Known in the medical literature as "Flip Liver Transplant" and recognized as an innovative approach, this procedure was successfully performed through the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Balcı and the University of Groningen transplant team. This work once again demonstrates the pioneering mission of the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine.
