Reimagining Kassia - Academic Colloquium
The "Kassia'yı Düşlemek / Reimagining Kassia" colloquium, which will address the works and historical role of Kassia, the Byzantine poet, composer and hymnographer and one of the first female figures in world art history, will be held on 30 March 2022 at the Pera Campus, hosted by the Bahçeşehir University Conservatory in cooperation with the Cartoon & Animation departments of the Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Communication and the Istanbul Women's Museum. At the event, the BAU Conservatory's music ensemble classroom, which will bear Kassia's name, will also be inaugurated.
In the colloquium, moderated by Lecturer Dr. Özgecan Karadağlı Kuntz of the BAU Conservatory Music Department, speakers including distinguished researchers from abroad will offer a historical perspective and focus on topics such as the artistic significance of Kassia's works and contemporary art education for women. The presentations by Dr. Cecily Hennessy (Christie's Education London), Dr. Alexander Lingas (City University of London), Prof. Dr. Özlem Doğuş Varlı (Uludağ University), Meral Akkent (Istanbul Women's Museum), Brett Umlauf Arjomand and Çiğdem Borucu will be accompanied by a mini recital of Kassia's works and a sound installation performance. In addition, a special animation about Kassia prepared by the Cartoon & Animation department of the BAU Faculty of Communication will be screened.
Kassia, who holds a special place in history as much for the works she produced in the 9th century as for her struggle for artistic freedom against the religious and male-dominated authorities of her time, is one of the distinguished names of Istanbul's rich cultural heritage.
The Event Will Be Held in Hybrid Format.
