The project “My Colorful Wheels” which is designed by the Technical Departments of Bahçeşehir University Vocational School became a hope for disabled people who cannot afford to buy appropriate wheel chairs to their disability. The aim of the project is to provide a more quality life for disabled people by designing wheelchairs which can satisfy their physical conditions, lifestyles and personal desires.
In the project which is designed by Bahçeşehir University Professor İnci Zaim Gokbay and students of Vocational School technical programs, it was aimed to come up with solutions to problems that disabled people have with standard wheelchairs.
The volunteers are selected carefully by the Physically Disabled Foundation (FEV). All the industrial experiences were provided by Machine Tools Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TIAD) so that students can design all the details carefully and make them ready for the production. The project was implemented carefully by University- Industry and NGO triangle, 5 wheelchairs were designed in 2 years and delivered to volunteers.
Last wheelchair was designed by our student Uğur COŞAR for 16 years old İsmail Can. İsmail Can who suffers from S.P didn’t have a functional wheelchair which prevents him from falling down from his wheelchair and which can reach up to his child soul. His family applied to the project, their needs were listened, İsmail Can’s measurements were taken and his needs were defined by spending time with him.
First of all, the seat belts and seat were designed. Both the seat and seat belts were designed by a special fabrics and foam filled form so that it will prevent him from falling during the coarctations and it will not disturb his body. Arms were supported by special armbands. Pedals were designed so that during coarctations, it could be brought up to spine position faster and special scissors and removable systems were designed for the backrest. To stabilize the chair during the coarctations ,back part of chair was supported by a specially manufactured 16 inch bike wheel and silicone filled wheels were put to the front part, the chair was supported by special brake systems. The chair was designed as portable and especially light that it will be able to fit into the car which İsmail Can‘s family uses to carry him.
