New Foundation Launched to Combat Cancer: Focus on Prevention, Early Diagnosis, and Scientific Research
The Türkiye Cancer Control, Prevention and Research Foundation (TKÖAV), which aims to strengthen cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and public awareness, was introduced at Bahçeşehir University. The foundation seeks to promote cancer prevention, expand early diagnosis practices, support scientific research, and raise public awareness.
The launch event, held at Bahçeşehir University’s Beşiktaş Campus, was attended by Halit Yerebakan, Deputy Chairman of the AK Party and Head of Health Policies; AK Party Istanbul MP Attorney Şengül Karslı; TKÖAV Founder Prof. Dr. Berrin Pehlivan; TKÖAV Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. Dr. Türker Kılıç; BAU Board of Trustees Member Saygın Şenel; BAU Rector Prof. Dr. Esra Hatipoğlu; Bahçeşehir College General Manager Dr. Özlem Koç; and actor Mert Fırat.
Prof. Dr. Berrin Pehlivan, Founder of the Foundation, emphasized that cancer is not only a disease but also a process that deeply affects individuals and their families. She highlighted prevention, awareness, early diagnosis, and education as the most critical elements in the fight against cancer.
Prof. Dr. Türker Kılıç, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, described cancer as a major public health issue and stressed the importance of supporting scientific research to strengthen efforts against the disease.
Dr. Özlem Koç stated that the fight against cancer is not only a medical issue but also a social one, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, access to accurate information, and social solidarity.
BAU Rector Prof. Dr. Esra Hatipoğlu underlined the need to place greater emphasis on prevention, noting that raising awareness and strengthening social cooperation are just as important as early diagnosis.
Speaking at the event, Mert Fırat pointed out that various factors, ranging from environmental conditions to lifestyle habits, influence cancer risk. He emphasized the vital importance of raising awareness, supporting research, and taking preventive measures in the fight against cancer.
