Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine recently organized a conference titled “Functional Neurosurgery in Neuro-Psychiatric Disorders” on April 12th, 2013. This conference brought together leading experts and clinicians to discuss the usage of surgical methods in treating diseases such as Parkinson's, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Depression. The goal of the conference was to discuss the use of surgical methods where traditional methods have been unsuccessful.
The scientific program of the conference was prepared by Dr. Muzaffer Kaşer from Cambridge University Department of Psychiatry and Dr. Akın Akalın from Bahçeşehir University Department of Neurochirurgia. The conference started with a speech by Prof. Dr. Ali Güngor, the vice-rector.
During the conference, presenters discussed the treating effects of deep brain stimulations in psychiatric diseases. In the morning session, Dr. Athanasios Koulousakis from Köln University Hospital, Dr. Sam Chamberlain from Cambridge University, Associate Prof. Dr. Metehan Irak from Bahçeşehir University, Dr. Muzaffer Kaşer from Cambridge University, and Dr. David Christmas from NHS Scotland Advanced Treatment Unit made their presentations. The panels were enriched with questions from participants.
In the afternoon, the session started with a speech by Professor Eileen Joyce from University College London. The ethical aspects of surgical treatments in neurochirurgia were discussed with the presentation of Prof. Maartje Schermer from Erasmus University. In the joint discussion, participants explored the ethical considerations of using surgical methods to treat psychiatric disorders.
In the final panel, Prof. Eileen Joyce and Dr. Akın Akakın made their presentation on the psychiatric and surgical aspects of deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's Disease. At the end of the meeting, future projects were discussed and the foundations of international cooperation were laid for new clinic researches. Overall, this conference was an important step in advancing our understanding of the use of surgical methods in treating neuropsychiatric diseases.
