As part of the SOC2001 Urbanization course and BAUMUS Earthquake Awareness Month, we visited the Kandilli Observatory. During this trip, we had the opportunity to experience and closely observe many different areas.
First, we were informed about the precautions that need to be taken for earthquake-resistant buildings. The importance of securing household items to the wall and practices aimed at reducing risks during an earthquake were explained. Then, in groups of four, we participated in an earthquake simulation, giving us the chance to experience a potential earthquake firsthand.
Later in the tour, we visited the museum, which displays instruments used in the past for earthquake-related observations and solar measurements. Here, we had the opportunity to examine in detail the differences between the tools used in the past and the modern measuring devices used today. Then, touring the observatory, we learned how sunspots are observed and measured using refracting telescopes. Finally, we completed our tour by learning how weather is measured, the meteorological instruments used for this purpose, and their working principles.
Focusing on three different areas during the tour was very valuable in terms of understanding the relationship between earthquakes and their different dimensions. The relationship between weather events and solar activity and earthquakes is still being debated in scientific research, and no definitive conclusion has been reached on this subject. Therefore, closely observing these areas was extremely important in order to assess earthquakes from a more comprehensive perspective.
It should not be forgotten that Turkey is an earthquake-prone country and has faced many different earthquakes throughout history. While some earthquakes around the world have caused significant loss of life, others have been weathered with almost no casualties. Therefore, minimizing loss of life is our responsibility as a society. In this regard, taking the necessary precautions and constructing earthquake-resistant structures is of vital importance.
