The new session of “The Voice of Deep Roots,” a cultural event series organized by the Ümit Tokcan Folklore Research and Application Unit of Bahçeşehir University Conservatory, took place on Friday, May 9, 2025, at BAU Pera Stage. This session focused on the traditional instrument tulum, one of the most emblematic instruments of the Eastern Black Sea region.
The panel featured renowned tulum master Remzi Bekar—recognized by UNESCO in 2024 as a “Living Human Treasure”—along with Prof. Dr. Abdullah Akat, tulum artist Gökhan Alptekin, tulum luthier Baykan Bayraktutan, and cartoonist Yakup Aksoy. Moderated by Rıza Can Özel, the discussion addressed the traditional performance practices of the tulum, its role in academic and musical contexts, the craft of tulum-making, and its place within state choirs.
Enriched by live performances, the event offered a dynamic and insightful platform combining academic knowledge with cultural heritage. Hosted by Bahçeşehir University Conservatory, the event was open to the public and free of charge.
