“Research on Syrian Refugee Children” which was carried out by Bahçeşehir University (BAU) Department of Psychology and has been the first in its field in the world made a tremendous impact in USA.
The researches performed by a crew managed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serap Özer from Bahçeşehir University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selçuk Şirin from New York University in the Refugee camp in Islahiye, Gaziantep, proved that the influence of civil war in Syria is much more greater than expected.
The report was introduced in a press meeting, in which Irina Bokova, the General Director of UNESCO also participated in, and American CNN television and NPR radio paid great interest in the report.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şirin gave a speech on CNN and stated that after the interviews carried out with the kids one by one, they have witnessed several incidents which can be defined as trauma, and the children’s reactions, stress disorders, depressions, psychosomatic issues and as a result it is detected that three out of four children lost one of their relatives in the war, one out of three children was exposed to physical violence, and two out of three children’s relatives were exposed to physical violence.
Dr. Şirin stated that if these children are not treated they will have no choice but to apply violence and in order to prevent this professional help is required qualified teachers are needed in order to achieve such goal.
