Frequently Asked Questions About Graduate S/R Grade Conversion

Frequently Asked Questions About Graduate S/R Grade Conversion
Please click for frequently asked questions about graduate level S / R grade conversion.

  1. What is the R (Revoke) grade?
  • The R (Revoke) grade is a special grade applicable only to the 2019-2020 academic year spring semester and summer school and to the 2020-2021 academic year; it allows any of your courses in which you received an (F) or (NA) grade to be treated as if they had never been taken in the relevant semester, without affecting your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA).
  • In other words, it is a grade we have defined in the system for courses that you will have to repeat later but whose grade from that semester you do not want to affect your average.
  1. What is the S (Successful) grade?
  • The S (Successful) grade is a special grade applicable only to the 2019-2020 academic year spring semester and summer school and to the 2020-2021 academic year; you can convert courses in which you received a letter grade of (C) or higher for master's or (B) or higher for doctoral programs, and it ensures that the course meets the national credit, ECTS credit and course-number requirements of its category without affecting your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA).
  1. Which and how many of my courses can I convert to (S) and/or (R) grades?
  • Graduate students can convert a maximum of 2 (two) courses in total to (S) grades in the fall and spring semesters and summer school of the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • This total right to convert 2 (two) courses can be used in a single semester of the 2020-2021 academic year if desired, or spread across the semesters of the academic year as the student wishes. (For example, one student may use both rights in the fall semester and choose not to make any conversions in other semesters, while another student may make no conversions in the fall semester and save the conversion rights for the spring semester and summer school.) The only thing to remember is that the total right is limited to 2 (two) (S) grade conversions and that conversions made cannot be changed later.)
  • At the graduate level, the (R) grade can be used without any limit on the number of courses for all courses in which an (F) or (NA) grade was received in the relevant academic semester.
  • The number of courses mentioned in this article is a maximum, and students who do not use this right within the given period cannot claim any rights regarding unused conversions in subsequent academic years.
  1. How and when can I convert to (R) and (S) grades?
  • Conversions are made on the dates announced to students after the make-up exams in the 2020-2021 fall and spring semesters and after the final exams in summer school.
  • Students can convert the grades of their courses in the relevant semester through an application that will be activated on st.bau.edu.tr.
  • No conversion will be made by petition outside the R/S conversion periods announced in the academic calendar.
  • For no reason can conversions be made for past semesters or previously made conversions be undone.
  1. Do I have to repeat a course I converted to an (R) grade?
  • A course you converted to an (R) grade must be repeated in subsequent relevant academic semesters. Remember that you must repeat the course you converted to an (R) grade in the first semester in which it is offered!
  • If the course is in the elective category, you can take another elective course in that category in subsequent relevant academic semesters in place of the course you converted to an (R) grade.
  1. If the course I converted to an (R) grade is a course I am repeating, how does it affect my cumulative grade point average (CGPA)?
  • If the course you converted to an (R) grade is a course you are repeating, your most recent grade other than (R) before the semester in which you made the conversion counts toward your CGPA.
  • If you have no grade other than (R) in previous semesters, the course is not included in the SGPA and CGPA calculation.
  1. I took a course from a different university in summer school. Can I use my S conversion right for this course (or these courses)?
  • For courses taken at a different university in summer school for which course equivalence has been granted, (S) conversion can be made once only, limited to the conversion right granted to you, provided that you apply by petition to the Student Affairs Office within the week following the equivalence.
  1. I am an exchange student. How can I use my (R) and (S) grade conversion right?
  • You will be able to use your (R) and (S) grade conversion right once only for the semesters in which course transfers are made for the semester(s) you attended through exchange programs in the 2020-2021 academic year, within the week following the equivalence. To do so, you should contact your academic unit secretariat when your exchange program ends and submit your petition on the matter.
  • Students who have had course transfers for courses taken at different universities other than through exchange programs and summer school cannot benefit from this right.
  1. Can I request a single-course exam for a course I converted to an (R) grade?

You cannot request a single-course exam for a course you converted to an (R) grade.

  1. Can I retake a credit course that I converted to an (S) grade in future semesters to improve my grade?

Students can repeat courses they converted to (S) grades in the following semester. In such a case, the grading of the course taken is subject to the rules of the current semester.

  1. Will the courses I converted to (R) grades appear on my transcript?

Yes, the courses you converted will appear on your transcript.

  1. Are there different rules for taking courses converted to (R) grades in subsequent semesters/years?

All rules that normally apply to course repeats also apply to repeats of courses converted to (R) grades.

  1. Will converting grades to (S) or (R) affect my class ranking?
  • Graduation achievement rankings at Bahçeşehir University are based on the cumulative grade point average as set out in the relevant directive. Only in ranking students whose cumulative grade point averages, determined according to the relevant directive, are equal, the number of courses converted to (S) grades in and after the 2020-2021 academic year fall semester is considered first. Priority in ranking is given to the student with fewer courses converted to (S), after which the other criteria in the directive are applied.
  • "S" grades converted in the 2019-2020 spring semester and summer school are not taken into account in rankings, since no restriction or announcement was made on this matter in that period.
  • Remember that other universities, institutions or organizations may have different achievement criteria for the procedures you carry out with them.
  1. How should I decide how many/which courses to convert to (R) and (S) grades? What do you recommend?
  • Before making any conversions, you should review the courses, categories, credits and numbers you will need to complete in the future using the graduation requirements application. We strongly recommend that you consult your program coordinator about how this choice will affect your success in future semesters.
  • During the grade conversion period, before finalizing your conversion, you should use the simulation on st.bau.edu.tr to see how the desired conversion will affect your cumulative grade point average.
  • Remember that once you click the "Finalize" button and confirm the change, you will be deemed to have accepted the change you made and the resulting grade point average. There is no right to undo after this step.
  • If you are a graduate student, you use 1 (one) right for each (S) grade converted. You have a total of 2 (two) (S) grade conversion rights in the 2020-2021 academic year. Once you use your rights, you cannot take them back.
  1. I have questions about grade conversion. Where can I apply?
  • You can ask your program coordinator all your questions about this process.
  • You can also call 444 28 64 with any questions or create a request at help.bau.edu.tr.

NOTE: THE R/S GRADE CONVERSION APPLICATION ENDS AT THE END OF THE 2020-2021 ACADEMIC YEAR WITHOUT ANY FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENT. CONVERTED GRADES CANNOT BE REVERSED FOR ANY REASON.
