The Principles Pertaining to “Delivery of Courses”, “Student Assessment Activities and Grades” and “Registration Freezing (for associate degree, undergraduate and graduate students)” for 2019-2020 Academic Year Spring Term will be applied as follow:
DELIVERY OF COURSES
The courses of the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year that do not require face-to-face delivery will be delivered online through synchronous and asynchronous contents and all synchronous content will be recorded to be monitored and evaluated thereafter. The classes that were suspended between March 16-22 will be taught online at the end of the semester, between June 1-7. The courses that require face-to-face delivery, internships and classes that cannot be delivered through remote learning such as projects will be planned based on the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and the courses will be delivered intensively during the summer months at specific dates to be announced. All the final and make-up examinations of the courses will be administered in the campuses of our university following this period of implementation based on the final and make-up examination programs. Whether summer school will run as scheduled and the principles to be applied will be considered at a later date in accordance with the decisions of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE).
STUDENT ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES AND GRADES
All student assessment activities for all our courses will be conducted in accordance with the principles of fairness, transparency and accountability through monitoring the results in line with the processes insofar as possible. All academics/instructors are responsible for using the most appropriate assessment activity considering the characteristics of the course that they teach. The department chairs and the deans/directors will pay utmost attention to the management of this process to ensure a thorough and coherent one.
All grading procedures will continue as they have been applied until now following the end of the make-up examinations and the academics/instructors will specify and submit the letter grades through the system for the course(s) they teach. However, considering the extraordionary challenges as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, students will have the option of choosing one of the two changes that are more appropriate for them for the graded courses after their letter grades have been submitted through the system (after the make-up examinations) between the
announced dates of application only for the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year to ensure that our students can continue their studies without anxiety while staying safe:
i) A student who has received a letter grade of D and higher from any course taken may request that their grade be changed to “S (Successful)”. In this case, the student desires that the course meets the requirements of the number of courses in the relevant category, local credits and ECTS credits, but without factoring into a student’s grade point average (Grades received for these courses will not be used in computing a student’s GPA and CGPA). The student may wish to repeat the course in the subsequent semesters, however, if a letter grade is used for the period when the course is taken, students cannot change their letter grades to “S (Successful)” again. Therefore, the letter grade that was received remains in the system.
ii) A student may wish to change their F and NA grades to “R (Revoke)” through an application that will be active on “st.bau.edu.tr” at specific dates after the make-up examination grades have been announced. The R grade will be introduced to the system for the extraordinary situation in this context and it bears a resemblance to the W (Withdraw) grade, which is already used in our system. A course completed with a R grade will by no means factored into a student’s grade point average. Yet, this grade shows that this course has been officially taken and the student cannot ask for a refund for the registration fee. The course load and restrictions on regulations notwithstanding, any course can be changed to R grade. These courses also involve the freshman year ones.
REGISTRATION FREEZING:
Upon their request, all associate degree, undergraduate and graduate students (including those who are enrolled in the English preparatory program and scientific preparation programs) enrolled in the spring semester and who have the confirmation of tuition fee payments may request their registration to be frozen in the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year until April 15, 2020 without counting from the maximum period. Students who have reached their maximum registration freezing procedures can also freeze their registration only for the Spring Semester of 2019-2020 Academic Year.
This procedure should be carried out with the decision of the board of the institutes along with the opinions of the thesis advisors for the graduate students who are in the thesis stage of their graduate studies (master’s or PhD) and who cannot continue their thesis studies remotely.
The graduate students who are in the thesis stage but who have reached the maximum period have been provided with the additional time (3 weeks) that corresponds to the period when the studies were suspended and the dates for the submission and defense of theses have been announced.
For the registration freezing procedure, students who are enrolled and who have the confirmation of tuition fee payments will be able to apply through the system and no additional documents will be required.
