SETH: I CONSIDER TURKEY’S EFFORT SIGNIFICANT
Nikhil Seth, Deputy Secretary-General of United Nations and the President of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), states that “The migration issue in Turkey is important. I consider Turkey’s effort on this issue significant. I hope that the situation in the regions where the refugees come from will improve and they go back to their homeland. I find it very positive for Turkey’s work on this issue.”
WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF UNITED NATIONS IN MIGRATION?
Seth who emphasized that “the duty of the UN is to find partners who provide the fund rather than providing direct fund”, stated that “Our duty is to create political and sociological environment for the formation of this sharing, and is to ensure that both EU and other countries as well as international banks concern and support this issue. The UN is in the catalyst and organizer role.
“WE MUST UNDERSTAND THE MIGRANTS”
Seth stated that “75 percent of the migration in the world took place from poor country to poor country. Nobody wants to leave the country. This is always a difficult decision and is a result of necessity. That is why we need to understand and show consideration to migrants. Turkey has already taken serious steps in this regard. Turkey integrates migrants into society for education and employment, without discriminating. I hope that all countries will act and consider this issue in this way.”
“LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HAVE IMPORANT DUTIES”
Seth stated that “Local governments have important duties for the education of migrants. Instead of considering migrants as problem and burden, it is necessary to consider them as individuals who will participate in employment and education and contribute to the economy. I think it is very important to educate local authorities and increase their capacities in order to end discrimination and bias.
YUCEL: UN IS THE UNIFYING FORCE IN SOLVING WORLD’S PROBLEMS
Enver Yucel stated that “the United Nations attaches great importance to the inclusion of Bahcesehir University in the coalition of universities and many good projects will be implemented in the future. The United Nations started to work differently with the coalition. I see that UN is trying to bring together hundreds of universities in various locations of the world and change their perspective on social issues, which is also very important.”
Yucel specified that “Migration is in Turkey’s agenda for 10 years. Mission of the universities is to educate the students as well as deal with the social problems in Turkey and in the world. The problems of the world are increasing day by day. There are issues that different solutions are required. The UN is the unifying force in solving issues such as climate, poverty and education. States and universities need to support the UN.”
SOCIAL ADAPTATION OF SYRIAN CHILDREN
Prof.Dr. Nilufer Narli,Head of Department of Sociology, stated that “City centers are the target of irregular migration issues. It is necessary to work on the adaptation of children to social life. Current, 62 percent of Syrian children have been integrated into the education system in Turkey. This is an important achievement, but it is necessary to carry out art and sports activities in which quality contacts and interactions will bring together Turkish and Syrian children. Constructive contacts and interactions are essential for people to eliminate prejudice. We need such projects in Turkey.”
