In the ceremony held, Bahçeşehir University conferred famous scientist Prof. Dr. Gökhan Hotamışlıgil, the president of Genetic and Complex Illnesses Department in Harvard University on the title of Honorary PhD due to his leading edge discoveries in his field. Distinguished guests from business and academic world participated in the ceremony and Enver Yücel, the President of Board of Trustee awarded a golden badge to Hotamışlıgil.
Şenay Yalçın, the Rector of Bahçeşehir University gave a speech in the ceremony and stated that, “A scientist is only appreciated by those who walk in the same path. In this path contributing science and illumination we undertake a mission as a university and this is an honor and appreciation token we heartily present to scientists, the honorable and dutiful children of humankind.”
Hotamışlıgil gave his speech after he had been conferred on the title of honorary PhD from Enver Yücel, President of Board of Trustee and Prof. Dr. Şenay Yalçın, the Rector of the University and he stated that “I have not seen another university with such a rich structure and make one feel in a family environment as Bahçeşehir University does”. And he stated that the real light and motion shall never fade as long as young people spend time in such ambiances.
Hotamışlıgil and his team who study on obesity, diabetes type 2 and metabolic syndrome mechanisms, discovered a hormone named “lipokin” which is deemed as a vital achievement in the treatment of diabetes, obesity and related diseases and they revealed the mysterious relationship between fats and diabetes. These studies leaded up to developing new approaches for diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, fatty liver syndrome and asthma, and took credit for establishing a basis for many medicine production development programs in both academic and industrial areas
